    “Apple +” Zoom in
    “Apple -” Zoom out

Or slide the magnification slider at the bottom of the timeline window.

(Make sure you do not have any clip “selected” before you zoom.)

Opt-= and Opt– will zoom the timeline even if the viewer or the canvas is the active window.

    All the best,

    Tom

For me, the fastest thing is the z key. Draw a marquee around the area to zoom right into it. The press shift+z to zoom all the way back out.

I use a littly software utility so that I can map Apple + and Apple – to the mouse wheel.

Yeah, that’s what I’m going to do.

Thanks everyone for the responses, very helpful and it’s good to know different variations for the same function.

I’ll definitely take advantage of Shift-Z, but I don’t think I like using Z since it switches modes. I’d like if pressing Z just zoomed in a level when pressed. I’ll stick with Option- and Option+ mapped to my mouse wheel, and Shift-Z for zoom extents all.

Command M was one of my favorites in Avid because you could just draw the area you wanted to zoom. You can do this in FCP by selecting the zoom tool and using control or option to draw around the part of the TL you want.

I use a shareware utility called “USB Overdrive”. You can set the mouse’s scroll button to execute command+ (zoom in) when you scroll up, and command- (zoom out) when you scroll down. It’s a great little app, I missed the easy zoom in and out function when I switched from avid too!

Go to versiontracker.com and search for “USB Overdrive”
