Timeline zoom shortcut
Posted by Richard Ladius on May 2, 2009 at 10:58 pmEditing with Avid Media Composer 2.8 on Windows XP.
When I used the old Xpress Pro system, the up and down arrows would allow me to zoom in and out of the timeline. This function is no longer bound to the arrows on my MC system.
Trouble is, I can’t find the command that does the zooming in the Command Palette, so I can’t remap to button.
Does anybody know the name, icon, and location of the timeline zoom function?

May 3, 2009 at 12:09 amI’m pretty sure that ⌘-[ ⌘-] (cmd-left and right brackets) are the timeline zoom keys. I’m not at an avid now, so I cant be 100% sure.

May 3, 2009 at 2:17 amFrom the manual:
The Focus button allows you to zoom in on a section of the Timeline. It is located in the
Timeline toolbar next to the Timeline Fast Menu button.
The Focus button allows you to center the position indicator quickly and expand the
Timeline. The Focus button always expands the Timeline to a scale of 90 pixels per second.
The position indicator is centered in the window. When you click the Focus button again, the
Timeline returns to its previous size.Navigating in the Timeline
To focus the Timeline:
1. Move the position indicator to the frame or transition you want to expand.
2. Click the Focus button.
The region of the Timeline immediately surrounding the position indicator is centered
and enlarged.
3. Click the Focus button again to return to the previous view.Terence Curren

May 3, 2009 at 2:43 amIf you want the Up and Down arrows to zoom in and out like Xpress Pro, map More Detail and Less Detail to your keyboard. These are menu commands found in the timeline Fast Menu (bottom left of your timeline).

May 3, 2009 at 3:10 pmYou’re correct Lars. The other option to zoom into a specific region is ctrl – M, this allows you to draw a box around the area you want to zoom into.

May 4, 2009 at 5:14 amIf you are a wacom tablet user try mapping the more detail and less detail to the touch strip on the Intous 3 tablet. Feels very natural as you apply pressure.

October 5, 2009 at 10:43 amHey! I have a question, about how I get these menu commands (from the fast menu) on my keyboard. They are not in the command palette and I am not able to drag and drop them?!
Thanks already! -

Not every menu item can be mapped, but most can. You need to open the keyboard setting under the settings tab. Then open the Command palette from the Tools menu.
In the Command Palette, select ‘Menu to Button’ Reassignment on the bottom.
Now when you move the cursor over the keyboard graphic, you will see the icon change. Select the key you want to map the menu item to. It will stay highlighted as if depressed. Now go to the menu item you want and select it. Now it is mapped to that key on your keyboard.
All this and more can be found in the Media Composer Help under the help menu.
