Timeline Time Code doesn’t Match Tape Timecode

Does the clip in the Source Monitor match the original T/C of the tape?

The timecode on the source monitor seems to match that of the original tapes. I do not have the masters in my possesion right now, but things appear to be correct. I will check for sure later when I have the tapes.

The programs I am working on are for broadcast and need to have exact time code addresses for B&T and program start, etc. When I check the program after export to ensure these times are correct on the tape, they are all off by several frames, but not consistently so on different export attempts. One attempt may be fives frames late, the next maybe seven frames early. This is comparing it to the timecode on the timeline. I edit many programs a week and have not had this problem before. I have tried several different DSR-1500a’s and the problem persists so I am sure it is something with Premier and not the tape machine.

Are you seeing this discrepancy when exporting a timeline to tape?

Here is my procedure – I need frame accurate exports to tape also.

Example a 30 sec TVC with ID board and Leader to be exported to DSR-11 tape deck.

1.Tape is prestriped with Time code (eg 5 minutes worth of TC)

2. First Frame TVC needs to insert on tape at 00:01:30:00 (PAL)

3. The first frame of the TVC is on 00:01:30:00 in the timelne. The leader and ID board precede this TC

4. Go to first frame of ID Leader. (In my case it is 00:01:11:23)

5. I ensure the Work Area BAr is exactly covering this frame and the very last frame of the Exporting Clip

Theoretically 00:01:11:23 should be the TC I enter to Insert to tape but I have a 17 frame error if I do so. To offset this I call the Insert to Tape point 00:01:11:06. WOrks perfectly.

NOtes:
I know exactly why I have the 17 frame difference (no problem and a different story).

I use the Presets for DSR-11 Device control and I use no Pre Roll.

Step 2. The insert point on the tape can be any other TC – eg 00:02:30:00 – just use same offset math as described.

Thanks Craig for your help with this. The solution you offer is not helping me too much with this problem, but it is very helpful to me with using the DSR-11 I have access to and have considered using on some travel projects. You have solved one mystery for me while while working on another for which I am grateful.
