  • Timeline pauses. NOT due to slow computer or firewire bottleneck

Posted by Christopher Walker on May 19, 2005 at 3:34 am

I’ve asked about this problem before, and responders have thought the problem had to do with a slow computer or a firewire bottleneck. But I have a fast G5 computer, and now all my clips are on a plenty-fast internal slave drive instead of an external firewire drive, and I STILL get the same problem. Which is, that when playing the timeline it often will pause for a couple of seconds and then continue. Or, the video will continue playing but the audio will cut out and then return later. It happens with simple timelines and complex timelines, at any RT setting, on different projects, not always in the same spot, and if i replay the timeline at the place it paused, the second time it doesn’t pause! This also happens when I use print to video instead of just playing the timeline, and it happens even when i have mixed down audio and made the timeline just one long clip. This means that if I want to record to video I have to watch as it is recording so that I can start over if this unpredictable pause happens. Please help; it is very frustrating to work that way!

Make sure that you do NOT have “dupe detection” turned on for ANY of the timelines (sequences) contained in your project. Even if these timelines are not open or loaded, they will slow down your performance and create the kind of problems you’re describing. This issue grows worse with the longer your timeline and the more tabs you have open.

You also may want to turn off thumbnails images within the timeline and audio waveforms.

…would this be likely to be an issue when the project has just one sequence and one clip with audio mixed down? I am right now redoing a master tape from such a project, because it paused while printing to video…

it does have “show through edits” checked; what does that mean?

I’ve had the exact same error. Turning off all those options in the timeline, and deleting preferences fixed it. At least, I have very few errors now.

Are you actually working in 5.0 already and this is happening or still in 4.5.?
