Timeline Hijinks
When I’m trying to snap or drag open a space in the timeline using “select all tracks forward” the highlighting of the tracks showing where the edit is moving to doesn’t work. If I zoom in or out of the timeline the problem goes away but this work around is tiresome since the problem often plagues the zoom in position I most often work in. The problem seems to lie in certain clips. If I’m not shifting them there’s also no problem. I sometimes suspect markers play role but I have yet to figure it out. I’m now suffering through this annoyance on two separate systems with two separate projects. Is this my own personal gremlin? I could live without it. Any suggestions.

This may be a linking issue, since you said the problem lies with only certain clips. My guess is that your video & audio is linked on certain clips, and that you are getting clip collision. If you select+drag up to higher tracks (v3, v4 +) you may be able to move the clips. Make sure no tracks are locked either.
Also, you may have better luck using Shift+Z (Fit to Window) instead of zooming way out.
