  • Timecode when capturing SDI via KONA to FCP

Posted by Delano Bryant on October 11, 2007 at 7:45 pm

I am capturing my footage from the Canon XL H1 out through SDI. How do I get timecode from the camera with the video so that I will have the reference in FCP?

Is that the color red you want to use?

    Use firewire as deck control.

I think you’ll have to create a custom set up for this, where you use FireWire for device control, and the KONA inputs for your video / audio signals.

I have not done this with that particular camera, but in my experience, FW device control is not always frame accurate. It should work, but you might want to manually change the timecode numbers of each digitized clip to match exactly if you ever plan to recapture the material in a higher resolution. If you don’t have a TC burnin or film reel hole punch – it can be quite difficult to determine if your numbers are accurate or not.

If you are capturing ProRes and don’t plan to recapture from the tape ever, the timecode issue is probably negligible.

i have tried to capture that way. SDI, and Firewire for device control. I get initiliaztion errors.

Hmmm…that’s how I did it with the XL H1 and my Kona LH…

NOt sure how it works exactly with the Canon camera, but with Son HDv decks, I know you have to put the deck in DV mode so that the firewire signal is DV and FCP will then recognize it. The analog component of the HDV deck stays HD though, perhaps this is also possible with the Canon, downconverted dv signal through firewire, and HDSDI out of, well, HDSDI.

I do this often with the XL H1 and the Decklink Pro card. I modified an Easy Setup, changing machine control to Firewire basic. The XL H1 is then switched to DV downconvert over the firewire but the SDI outputs can be seperately switched for HD or SD SDI output regardless of the firewire setting.

This combination gives timecode accurate capture.

I know this was an old post, but what Sony HDV deck were you using with this technique? Thanks!
