Timecode Slave
Posted by Lars Director on December 11, 2006 at 2:41 pmDoes anybody know a way to slave playback a FCP timeline to a external timecode?
I own a Decklink Multibridge and like to drop some items at various points in a single timeline. It would be nice if that time line is slaved to an external timecode for playback.
I know it’s possible to do it with virtual vtr, but it has some advantages if I could do it with FCP.

Forget to mention… Yes, I HAVE READ most other posts on this frequently returning subject, but one might thing someone has written a plugin by now, or that someone has a workaround to get it done ;-).

December 11, 2006 at 3:18 pmYOu cannot export timecode from FCP. Typically what you’d do is black and code a tape before you lay down the footage. FCP can lay down timecode to tape that has matching code, but it cannot output code.

Well, you can via Firewire actually, at least in DVCPro HD to the 1200A you can.

Can you? Because with my DSR-11 I have to stripe code on it for a couple min then set the deck to generate code as it Assemble Edits. And from the 2 test outputs I did to the HD1200, I had to lay down code first as well. The deck, AFAIK, generates the code. FCP does not send out code as a signal.
Or am I way wrong?

It will send out signal when in the DVCPro HD mode and you set the deck into external TC. The guys at Panasonic told me this and it does work, though since most of my work is 720p, the TC is Non Drop Frame in FCP so I can’t lay that to tape for networks so I do the same things as you , just black the first minute or so and let the deck regen TC.

December 11, 2006 at 4:06 pmDudes, slave to, not export a timecode.
Exporting is easy, firts you record a timecode signal on an audio channel and then play it back on a spare cannel, plugged into the deck TC-in, and be sure that it does not mix with other channels.
Ok it takes a little tinkering to het is in sync, but once youve got it, you da man!

December 11, 2006 at 5:13 pmYep it does;-)
But there is a but to this one. It lacks the ease of simplu dropping a couple of clips on timecodes with huge caps between them. Lets say just 10 6 minutes clips in a single timeline spanning 10 hours.
Thanx though!
