It could be a setting. If you use a Kona card to capture (or Decklink…any capture card) you can have it capture and IGNORE the flags set by the camera. If you capture via firewire, FCP cannot ignore the flags and will capture as 24fps or 30fps…whatever the camera was set to. Perhaps the other person captured the footage at 60fps…and you at 30fps.

    This is all conjecture…

Do you know where this setting is on the AJA Control Panel? I don’t see it.

Could this have anything to do with the System Frequency setting on the deck? It was set to 59.94. Should I set it to 23.98?

This isn’t a Control Panel setting…this is a CAPTURE setting, most likely an Easy Setup. Kona DVCPRO HD 720p60 8-bit 59.94. You can choose any of the Kona DVCPRO HD capture settings and they will ignore the flags. And this is why you have to be careful when using the 23.98 Kona setting, making sure that you mark an IN on the A frame. or 00 TC.

    In my experience.

Why not use the DVCPRO HD 720p60 23.98 Varicam setting that I was using? No need for 8bit. I’ve only been using presets all along.

Something new: I noticed that the TC readout on the deck is 30fps. It still doesn’t explain why in the other project the TC rate is 60 and the frame rate is 23.98.

That’s fine. I only mention 8-bit as that is what the Kona setting says….and DVCPRO HD is an 8-bit codec. If you choose the DVCPRO HD 720p24 setting, and capture via firewire, it will detect the flags and capture the footage properly.

Got me…I don’t have a deck at my disposal, and I rent them only when capturing.

[thebishop] “Other than the way the timecode is displayed, there doesn’t seem to be a difference between a TC Rate of 30 and a TC Rate of 60. However with this footage, which was shot 720p60, the proper rate is 60. “

then your content was not shot onto tape.

Panasonic and Sony do not use 60fps timecode for tape based systems, they both use 29.97 (Sony does use 23.98 for HDCAM and the tapeless EX1)

IF you have 60fps TC the footage was captured on P2.

Panasonic’s Tape Based 720p acquisition always uses a 29.97 timecode base.

I’m sorry if I’m being unclear here. When this footage was originally digitized, the TC Rate was 60. By that I mean that when you looked at a clip in the viewer, the timecode went between 0 and 59 and hit various numbers depending which frames were flagged. It gave me 24 frames in between because the VIDEO FRAME RATE is 23.98.

Now when I digitize, I get a TC Rate of 30 and i see all 30 frames of video in between 0 and 30 in the viewer even though Final Cut is telling me the VIDEO FRAME RATE is different.

The timecode reading off the deck is 30fps, so it makes sense to me that that is why it would show up in Final Cut that way. However, why do I get different (and seemingly correct) results when I digitize through firewire with at 720p24 DVCPRO HD setting?

For whatever reason, the Kona card isn’t seeing the flagged frames and grabbing the right timecode the same way the firewire connection is.
