Timecode query
I captured a whole load of tapes from a Z1E – downconverting in camera – so captured as SD.
Then I realised I needed some good quality stills.
So I placed the Sony Timecode FX on the captured clips to identify the location I needed to recapture in HD. That worked quite well – I captured a couple of seconds either side of the frame I needed and placed it on the timeline.
But I thought I’d be able to add the Timecode FX to the newly captured clips so that I could go straight to the frame I’d previously identified. But the timecode just appears to be the position of the clip on the timeline – not the timecode from the tape. It was no big deal in this instance – just had to scrub back and forth till I found the right frame.
Is there a way of identifying the timecode from the tape?
By the way – first time I’d used the Sony HD capture utility – not impresses!

The usual way of doing it is to add the Timecode FX to the clip while it’s still in the media pool. I don’t shoot HDV so I’m not sure if this will work. Try it and see.

Firstly, there was no need to recapture – you could have created excellent quality stills by putting the initial capture on the timeline, finding the frame, setting preview to Best/Full and using the Floppy Disc icon above the preview window.
Secondly to find out timecode, no need to apply Timecode FX – in Options /Preferences /Video Select Show source frame on event thumbnail as …Timecode.
I have this on all the time so that camera time code is always visible in the Timeline and the Trimmer, without being on the output screen.
The other thing is that with HDV, capturing part of a tape always sets start frame to Zero – I’m not sure if this is a Vegas or HDV format limitation, but the only way to have camera time code available seems to be to capture the whole tape initially.

Peter – I recaptured because I wanted the stills to be of a reasonable size.
From now on I will be capturing via Cineform so won’t have to go through this pain again!!! Just need to buy some bigger hard disks!!!
