Hei everyone…I’m in the process of capturing all the DAT tapes from a show I’m editing, and for some reason all the captured clips are showing different time code from what I log. For example, I’ll capture a clip that ends at timecode 01:04:45:23, then it will capture and I’ll watch the timecode on the deck to make sure it is going to the right marks, but then the resulting file will show an end point of 01:05:15:21. It is a fairly consistent offset, but I cannot seem to correct it. The most I can change the playback offset is +00:04:04 for some reason.

I am using a DUAL G5 with Keyspan Serial Adaptor, and a Sony PCM7040 Dat Player. Final Cut 6. 4 Gigs Ram.

    Any thoughts? Thanks.

    Hi Rapscallion,
Long time that I don’t work with DAT and I don’t remember well. Could be because you have record Drop-frame TC and FC is interpreting the captured as No Drop-frame TC? I think this would match the differnce in between the two TCs.

Sorry i’m back. When you record Drop-frame Tc you jump a Frame every 10 seconds. In one minute you skeep 6 frames. In one hour 360 frames. So in one hour program could be a differnce of 12 second more or less if the TC is missinterpreted. But you get a much higher difference. Almost one minute. Too much. I don’t know what to think.

Hei Raf…thanks for tuning in…after lots of struggles, I found a solution:

I pulled out my old G4 workstation with Analog Inputs and RS422 built in; now it’s working like a charm…funny how new technology sometimes makes easy things difficult…but now with my 10 year old computer, it is working perfectly 😀

    Thanks again.

I’m going from memory here but in drop frame timecode I believe that you drop two frames every minute except on the 10 minute marks.
Trying to remember from the old linear days… ;-/
