I know that there are a ton of posts on here about timecode, maybe someone can direct me to the right one.

A few times I have run into issues with tapes becoming unusable in my DVX while they are still usable in other cams. I was recording the other day and then shut the camera down and powered back up the next day to find that I could do nothing with the tape but bluescreen in VCR or Camera mode. Fastforwarding and all that did nothing, I could hear the tape running but just got the * and all zeros for TC.

Is there a way to get the DVX to ‘read’ this tape again short of duplicating it through another camera? I was hoping for some sort of reset feature. FYI, the cam is set to REC RUN for TC generation.

Go to CAMERA MODE,get CAMERA MANUAL , goto to OTHER FUNCTION,
select USER FILE , select INITIAL , select YES .

Ok I did this, but I am not sure what I did. I know that I lost alot of my settings elsewhere in the camera. I also know that a NEW tape that I put in for the next shoot also gave me timecode issues on the first record run I did on it. So apprantly that reset feature or whatever does not effect the TC issue. Any other advice anyone?

Is the play back (blue screen ) fix ?

Im not sure I understand your question about the (fix). But the playback screen is blue when it does this and when I try to record it just flashes the * in the TC line letting me know it has issues.

Is it mean you still can not play back a good recorded dv tape ?

Travis, I’m having the exact same problem. Were you able to find a solution? Help! I’m in the middle of a big project. Thanks.

The only “fix” I found was to use the ‘end search’ feature that is built into the DVX. It is the little button towards the top right of the camera near the zoom button. It at least puts you at the end of your last take without getting the gaps in the t ape. I tried the camera reset and all that accomplished for me was, well, resetting my camera.

As for footage that I already have on broken TC tapes… The ‘capture now’ feature of FCP has also allowed me to skirt the actual issue and get my footage onto the G5. I just use my cheap Canon ZR-70 camcorder to capture media onto the computer and haven’t had any problems there with capture now. Apparantly the DVX is super-sensitive to timecode issues that other cameras don’t pick up.

One of the safest methods to avoid T/C breaks is to black or “stripe” your tapes before you use them – record with preset code with the lens cap on. It beds the tape for your camera’s tensioning and it gives an absolutely continuous T/C track that it will not replace but use to synchronise to and with. It may sound time consuming but if you do it the night before, and yes it will add to head wear but the most gentle wear possible. I think this would be my choice here, if there really is risk of losing contact with “Last frame”
