  • Timecode issue with Compressor 3

Posted by Matt Riley on February 7, 2008 at 11:35 pm

I have a QuickTime file that starts at timecode 02:00:30:00. The timecode was embedded during capture on another Final Cut Pro system.

Both QuickTime Player and Final Cut Pro show this as the starting timecode for the clip. When I drop this same clip into Compressor, it tells me the first frame has a timecode of 02:00:20:18. Ugh. I’ve verified this with multiple systems.

    Has anyone else seen this?

Having consistent timecode is essential to an accurate workflow and this sure isn’t it. Compressor is supposed to be able to do this kind of thing, since it even has a timecode burn filter but if it can’t get the code right, what’s the point?

Are you working with 720P or some form of DVCPro HD?

Black Magic 10 bit RGB (4:4:4) at 23.976 fps, 1080.

Shouldn’t be anything funky with it, I guess.

I’ll maybe have time to do some more tests with it tomorrow but right now I’m stumped.

I’m seeing this issue too. AJA DVCPRO HD captured clips dropped into
compressor to make h.264 for uploading etc., and want to do a TC burn.
Timecode is off on these encoded clips while FCP and Quicktime player show
    correct timecode.

I just verified the same problem with P2 material I imported last night. 🙁

I am having this same problem with ProRes 422 1080p 23.98 footage. I have tried straight from the sequence and Quicktime Movies and in each case the timecode is incorrect.

I have had this problem on 2 systems and I figured that it was just a bug in compressor 3 however when I tried it on my Laptop (Powerbook G4 1.5ghz) it worked perfectly. I am trying to figure out what would cause such a thing.

It appeared to work incorrectly regardless of the format (NTSC and HD) on the two Intel systems, but worked fine on my G4. Strange.

I have not figured out a solution yet. Hopefully I can do a reinstall and I will post back to tell you how that went.
