Often when you have recordings based on timecodes from time clock/free run and you get to shoot like over midnight or any how else that will break the timecode it will shift from 23:59:59:24 and back to 00:00:00:00

This has been the bane of video production for decades. I don’t know any device that understands that 00:00:00:00 comes after 23:59:59:24 as well as before it. I don’t think there is any way around it. You will always get a break, and will always lose some media to pre-roll. The only solution that I know of is to dub the tape with new TC across this area to be able to capture all the media on that part of the tape.

    All the best,

    Tom,
Betacam and DVCPro desks, never had that problem if you had set them up properly. I’ve been for a few years editing news that have to start in 00:00:0.00 (the people in the Control room wanted like that when broadcasting).
I think that wouldn’t be much difficult to make understand to FC that after the 23:59… comes the 00:00…and don’t consider this like a jump in the TC.

Any idea what specific settings that would make FCP be able to handle this? I’m on Digibeta and DVCProHD.

    Hi Austin,
If I would be in your situation I would try to capture the most of the footage in a normal fashion. Them I would try to capture some short clips of the area of the TC change.
    – Change in the Users preferences:
Uncheck “Abort capture on dropped frames”
Uncheck “Warn when inporting non-optimized media
ON TIME CODE BREAK: WARN AFTER CAPTURING
    – In Audio/Video setting> Device Control Preset> Non-controllable device.
Them I would try a “Capture Now” .
If you are able to capture the clips with the jump, FC gives you the chance to correct the TC so you will have not problem on editing.
