I cannot seem to figure out how to do this. I am trying to display the timecode on a pre-rendered project in AE7. I want the timecode to be displayed on the “black surrounding”, or window and not on the actual footage itself.

Have you ruled out shrinking the footage to make room for the timecode window?

Im just doing the VFX, but the guy asked me to add the timecode. I said I dont think its possible being the editor usually takes care of all that. I was just wondering if there is a way to accomplish it. The comp settings need to be 1280×720 at 23.98, they have not added sound yet so I am unable to change the resolution of the project.

If you drop the source into the timeline and add the effect Text>Timecode, doesn’t that work for you?

Yes it does, but what my problem is. When you add timecode (at least in Avid media) in an editing program it does a window burn so the timecode itself isnt presented on the images. When you do it in AE, it presents itself on the source footage and I want it in the “black window” that is presented on widescreen. I dont think this is somthing I can accomplish based on the strict resolution guidelines in AE.

Why dont you render the final comp out uncompressed and then drop it into your favourite NLE and add the timecode there?. Then just render it out to whatever format you choose?.

Are you trying to render out to the Avid codec? If so, then this won’t do exactly what you want. If you’ve got to have timecode over the letterbox black, you will have to render out uncompressed, or something other than Meridian.

Thanks, I thought this was the case. I thought maybe I might be able to do it in AE since then we could kill two renders with 1 stone but o well.
