    I need to burn timecode into my timeline sequence in order to have it visible for screening and a paper edit. There must be a very simple way to do this.

    Yes, use the effect in the video set called “timecode reader”. If you’ve got a set of clips and you’d rather have a global reference back to your FCP session, then you could nest that timeline and apply the reader to that.
