  • Timecode breaks with DSR-11, need new deck recommendations

The Sony DSR-11 does not want to play through timecode breaks on my clients’ tapes. I capture lots of tapes from many different clients, so asking them to take better footage is not an option, nor is getting the original camera. My consumer level Canon camcorder lets me play the tapes and capture off of it. Is there a pro level deck that will play through breaks so I can capture again?

Our DSR11 has performed gloriously for more than 6 years. The DSR is not the problem, likely. Have you cleaned the heads? Have you checked the head time? Maybe it’s just dying. But I’m betting it’s the tapes being provided. If they were shot with a Canon, they should be captured with a Canon because Canon has, in the past, used a slightly non-standard DV codec setup. If these are miniDV tapes, all bets are off.

But, yes, the Sony DSR45 uses a more robust transport than the discontinued DSR11.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”
