this is probably a simple answer but i can’t seem to figure it out…basically am importing clips into AE from FCP which have dozens and dozens of cuts and what i want to do is split the clips up into layers once i bring them in and be able to do some time remaps for certain layers without it bringing in the footage from what was split at the beginning or end of the clip, as if once the layers were split, they were their own clips entirely. any help is awesome.

not quite sure I understand exactly what you are trying to do here… There is a split command (EDIT > SPLIT LAYER) which you can use to cut up your clip. If you apply time remapping to the clip before splitting you only have to apply it once, then you can go ahead and time remap each individual layer…

sorry i didn’t notice this response for a while…the problem is that even after the layers are split, they’ll dip back into the other ‘layer’ essentially; that is, instead of going treating the split clip like it is the only thing on the clip, it uses the footage that is before/after it just like it is still connected. not sure if i’m using the proper lingo, but you know what i mean?
