  • Time Remap tool = Adobe Rate Stretch tool?

1st let me say I am brand new to Final Cut, so please forgive the ignorance.

I am trying to find a tool inside Final Cut Pro that will perform the same function as the Rate Stretch tool inside Adobe Primere. I would like to able to stretch the length of my clip on the timeline. I just switched over to Final Cut this week after several years using Premiere. I am still working my way through the 10lbs of documentation that came with it, however, the closest thing I have been able to find to it so far is the Time Remap tool. However, as near as i can figure, the Time Remap function will only adjust the speed of playback within the original length of the clip.

I have tried searching through the archives here on creative cow and also the web in general, but alas to no avail.

If there is a simple technique I can use to stretch clips on the timeline, I would be eternally greatful if someone could turn the light on for me.

    Thanx

    Okay okay, I appoligze…

It looks like all i had to do was select the clip then modify its speed at a constant rate. This seems to be what I am looking for.

Truly sorry for wasting space with such a usless post…. next time I just keep reading till I find the answers.

The best trick is fit to fill. Kind of the standard thing across most editing systems. Does Premiere call it something else?

Easiest thing to do is to mark the in and out on the timeline, then drag the clip from the bin or viewer to the canvas and choose fit to fill. It’ll adjust the speed to fit the space.

If your clip is already in the timeline, put the playhead over it and press f to match it back into the viewer. Then mark in and out and drag from the viewer to canvas like above.

Well I wouldn’t say that this was a useless post as, even though I read about “fit to fill” I was not aware that it automatically changed the speed. That’s good to know.

To answer your question Bret, in Premiere there is a tool that you can use on a clip once it’s already placed in your timeline that will, via automatically changing the speed, rate stretch a clip simply by dragging the outpoint of the clip to your desired endpoint in the timeline. Essentially the same thing I suppose.

Ok. I realize I’m responding to a post that is from the dark ages…but still, here I am.

I’m dealing with the same issue. I come from “premiere land” and am still getting acclimated to FCP. This “fit to fill” hint worked perfectly for me in FCP 6.

But there seems to be a catch. While it works just fine when I’m previewing it within FCP, once I export the video using quicktime conversion – the “fit to fill” footage is exported as black. I tried exporting a it a few different times trying a few different settings and the results were all the same. Black video.

Any thoughts? I did a google search on this and didn’t find much.

Im migrating to final cut from premiere too.
    I use the stretch tool a lot…

I think i have find something like the stretch premiere tool… a bit more complicated.

1- with the clip in FCP timeline
2- at 100% speed drag the outpoint to the time you want
3- double click on the clip to open it in viewer.
4- go to “motion” and open the “time remap” option
5- put the timeline cursor in the frame you want the clip to make the out.
6- go to the source frame green line and make a keyframe with option+click
7- drag the keyframe to the out side of the timeline (next to the other keyframe).

    That is.

hope to be usefull and you can understand my english… im spanish native speaker.
