  • time remap still series via nesting

Posted by Paul Dougherty on March 23, 2010 at 2:57 pm

I have a bunch of stills that I’ve cut into a sequence, each with a 1 sec duration.

I’d like to do some time remapping on it by calling it up into the Viewer as a single unit and using the Time part of the Motion tab to plot the keyframes. I was hoping to create this single unit by copying the multi image seq into a new seq that is just a single block (unit) in a new timeline.

But when I double click on this “block” nested 2nd sequence I only succeed in getting the original multi-image seq to appear in the Canvas and not as a single unit in the Viewer as I hoped. How best to achieve this to time remap a series of stills to vari the speed at which they cycle?

    Thanks,

    Paul

Helps to know what version you’re using. In the current version you do it directly in the speed indicators in the timeline. In earlier version you can use the timeline keyframe area to time remap the nested sequence, or if you really want to do it in the viewer, option-double click on the nested sequence.

    All the best,

Thanks Tom, yes sorry I’m on 6.0.6

Option double click puts it into Viewer but it resists my efforts to manipulate the keyframes in Motion – Time. This would be the preferred place to work with KFs.

As to “e. In earlier version you can use the timeline keyframe area to time remap the nested sequence” pardon my ignorance but I know how to place keyframes in the Timeline clip for opacity but how for speed – Time remap?

    Thanks,

    Paul

“it resists my efforts to manipulate the keyframes”

    No idea what this means.

Click the clip keyframe button in the lower left of the timeline. Click on the clip with the time remap tool to apply a keyframe. Right-click in the keyframe graph area in the timeline to select the time remap graph. You should probably read up in the manual about using this.

    All the best,

“it resists my efforts to manipulate the keyframes”

It means I can’t move or create keyframes in the Time panel of the nested seq you helped me call into the Viewer with the opt-double-click command. On closer inspection I see that it’s stuck in Constant Speed since that option is greyed out …aka stuck. However when you get a regular clip from the timeline into the Viewer you can move the keyframes around and presto you’re in Variable Speed. So it’s a mystery to me why I’m stuck in Constant Speed.

Even though it’s very unfamiliar territory to this Avid editor, I’ll start to read up on Time Remap Tool as you suggest.

    Thanks,

    Paul

It’s different in the current version. If you can’t switch to variable in the Motion tab, select the time remap tool and click on the click in the timeline. The viewer should then be in variable speed.

“select the time remap tool and click on the click in the timeline.”

The option to click on a nested sequence with the time remap tool goes away (an beeps if you try). In 6.0.6 is the only option to export the sequence, import the exported sequence and then apply time remap. Bummer if it is.
