  • Time-line is red – my video has disappeared

I’ve searched the Premiere Pro Forum archive, but cannot find the answer to a problem I’m experiencing with a project.

I opened a nearly finished project and found the time-line all ‘RED’. There is no video nor sound, although all the edit points are there. Supered over the red it says ‘Media Offline’ in both English & Japanese. Actually, I should clarify…there is ‘SOME’ sound, a bird sfx from a CD and a also a couple of titles, but all the soundbites and video are gone. A backed up version on an internal drive is the same way.

The actual project is located on one of three external harddrives that I have. The drives are attached to a 4 port USB box which goes to the computer via a single USB cable. I also have a short USB cable connected to this same box, which I use to add photos from my small jump drive. In fact, I THINK that’s when I noticed my large harddrive had changed its drive letter from G: to J: Evidently, the jump drive had the same letter? I’m not sure.

The reason I say ‘think’ is because about this same time I also added 2 gigs of RAM to the computer and changed my video card (the old one went bad.) Things have generally been messed up since then. I’ve had to re-zize my monitors, project timelines etc.

The big question is: how do I get my partially edited video project back? Do I change my external harddrive letter back to G: If so, how do I do that without messing up the project?

In the past, I have noticed a couple of OTHER projects that turned to red on the timeline. Fortunately, they were completed…this one is not. I’m wondering if I’m doing something fundamentally wrong, as I operate the system. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.

This usually happens when the drive letter changes. Fortunately, this is an easy fix. Right click on the missing files in the PROJECT WINDOW > Link Media > “click on files”

Anarev’s solution should work, but if it doesn’t work, I have a rather verbose method that works I can send you. Sometimes relinking media on multiple external drives ain’t so hot an idea. Personally, I don’t use them except to copy media materials from, to a raid storage solution.

Thank you for the information Aanarav. I will file your tip for future reference, if I should have the problem again.

I actually used the following method to retrieve the project, which was given to me by a friend, before I received your message. I removed all USB devices, except for the hard drive. I then re-booted, right clicked on My Computer, clicked Manage, Disk Management, then right clicked on the USB drive and changed the drive letter back to G: I then re-booted and changed any duplicate letters on my small USB flydrives. I don’t know if this is the correct thing to do, but so far, so good.

Thanks again for your prompt response to my problem. It feels good to be working on the project again.

    Best regards,
    Wendall

Thanks Gene. Yes, I am also interested in your method of retrieving a project. I do not want this problem ever again!

I am also interested in your method of editing. I sometimes run into problems using my External drives. Basically, I capture my video to an Internal drive, then transfer the file to my External drives & edit on them. Is that an exceptable method? To edit a large project on an Internal drive would require larger drives that I presently own. I am however considering purchasing a WD500GB Internal drive.

    Thanks.

Sounds like you have it solved. Your friend gave you a similar solution to mine.
