Time Lapse in Motion 5

I would assemble your timelapse images in Quicktime 7 by importing the image sequence and then exporting a ProRes movie, which you can then bring directly into FCP. Not sure why you would need Motion.

I don’t own QuickTime 7. Was hoping to do this without buying anything else. QuickTime 7 doesn’t come with FCPX or Motion 5 – does it?

It comes with your Mac. You could probably use QT X as well, I just prefer QT 7 as it has more features.

My Mac (early 2011 15″ macbook pro) came with Quicktime 7, but not the pro version. Looks like it takes the pro version to import image sequences. Too bad it didn’t come with FCPX or Motion 5. Also, it looks like Quicktime X can’t import image sequences (at least that I can see).

So, I guess I could purchase Quicktime 7 Pro for 30.00. However, it seems like I should be able to do this in Motion.

1) I batched corrected all my images in Lightroom and exported the images at a manageable size.
2) I imported the image sequence into Motion 5 – set project to 24P.
3) Everything played fine, but it was faster then I wanted.
4) I exported as a prorez file and then took it into FCPX.
5) I added music and slowed the footage down to 25%.
6) Exported the movie and everything was fine.

The process was fine, but I’m wondering how much I’m degrading the movie by slowing down 25% in FCPX? Is there a simple way I can tell Motion 5 the length I want each image to be? That way the file coming out of Motion 5 would be perfect. Or, can anyone suggest a better way without Quicktime 7 Pro?

You get Quicktime Pro with FCP X.
But your workflow is just fine. You can slow the image sequence down directly in Motion in the Timing section of the Properties Inspector. If you slow it way down, you could try Optical Flow frame blending as well.
