  • Time code when capturing via HDMI & Intesnsity Pro?

Posted by Todd Sansom on August 7, 2007 at 11:57 pm

We are looking at getting either the Sony HDV deck: M15U or M25U and have heard conflicting reports regarding time code from the HDV tape transferring with the footage.

The two “hearsay” are as follows.

#1 Using the Intensity Pro card, you can capture your media via HDMI which gives you a slightly better image than firewire upon capturing, however, time code from the tape (i.e. 02:00:00;00) is not transfered with the media. Rather, new time code is assigned to the media (i.e. 00:00:00;00).

#2 Using the Intensity Pro card, you can capture your media (video/audio) via HDMI and have deck control and data transfer with the firewire cable hooked up at the same time. Meaning (i suppose) that your time code and all other data on the HDV tape will be reunited as in a magical fairy-tale upon arriving to Final Cut.

Can anyone confirm either one of these?

    Hi,

HDMI is purely video and audio so no timecode is transferred. When capturing video signals (as opposed to firewire data), Final Cut Pro gets timecode via the deck control interface.

If you’re going to be capturing via HDMI, then you’ll need to get the timecode via the deck control protocol in Final Cut Pro. Using firewire to control the VTR is one way to do this.

I just captured via my Sony m25u going out HDMI into the Intensity Pro. I used a firewire cable and “Firewire NTSC” device control setting under Audio/Video settings in FInal Cut Pro. The audio and video came in via HDMI, and the timecode came in via firewire successfully.

thanks for both your input. We just picked up our new octa-core and threw in our new intensity-pro card so we are glad to know that everything works like we have heard it does. We can’t wait to get digitizing all of our footage. We’re behind schedule as it is and we have a week long shoot next week so time to get cranking!

Up and running, but not smoothly. We have our Intensity pro card installed in our new 3.0 Quad Core (intel). We can get audio/video via HDMI in the final cut log and capture but are unable to get time code and deck control.

For the moment we are using a sony HC-5 as our deck.

What ‘easy setup’ or audio/video setting should we use to achieve HDMI capture and time code/deck control via firewire?

    thanks and best wishes,

I’m having the same problem with deck control via firewire; I believe that I’ve tried all combinations in the audio/vidio set up menue. Any suggestions welcome,

    Hi,

In the Log and Capture window, make sure device control is set to firewire NTSC or firewire PAL.

In your deck, check that it is set to down convert on the firewire output or it will not recognize the deck control commands from Final Cut Pro.

    Kristian,

Thank you for your advice. Following your instructions I can control my HDV player from FCP, but I’m unable to split the resultant clip at time code breaks. In FCP selecting Mark/Timecode Break results in a message stating that ‘the clip that has been selected does not reference a movie that can be analyzed’ so I am unable to split the captured file into individual takes as I would following standard (SD) DV Capture. Am I doing something wrong or is this a limitation that I will have to live with?

Apologies for the basic nature of my questions, but I’m still getting to grips with FCP!

    Geoff
