  • Time code on capture now

Posted by Andrew Flood on March 6, 2006 at 10:37 pm

Using a HVR-ZU1 running time of day code I would like to capture DV footage to a firewire drive through my 17 inch powerbook running FCP-5. “Capture Now” works when “Device Control” is set to “Non-Controlllable Device” but there is no code transfer from camera. Any other setting gets a small clip with correct code but capture aborts with a message that I am at the end of tape. Anyone solve this issue?

Nope, no timecode when in non-controllable device.

Are you set to “Create a New Clip” at TC break? Obviously with time of day you’re going to have a TC break everytime the camera stops.

I am trying to do a poor man’s Focus Firestore. I intend to roll tape in the camera during an event but I am trying to simultaneosly digitize the footage. Since I will be in a fixed position I can set up the laptop and firewire drive. I am trying to avoid 6 hours of digitizing.
So I do have “Make new clip” selected. The timecode should not stop since it is on free run. I can see the timecode in the log and capture window when I select a firewire device in the “Device Contol” drop down menu. Time code goes away when I select “Non-Controllable Device”
Thanks for your idea. Apple does not seem to want me to do this.

This doesn’t work with FCP 5 or even 4.5. It used to work perfectly with FCP 3, but I have not been able to digitize on the fly via Firewire any longer since FCP 3.

hmm……ive done this recently with 4.5.

short clip tho, like, 3 mins.

i set up my camera, firewire into the hd, then hd to apple ibook g4, then hit capture now while in non-control device.

i wasnt runnin tape tho. perhaps that is a reason?

But did the timecode on the clip start at zero or did it have the code from free running code on camera?
In FCP-5 it seems to allow the capture on the hard drive it just makes up it’s own code. I want to have
the same code on the hard disk as the code on the tape. I appreciate your try. Andrew Flood
