I offline-ed a film 2 years ago, It was down converted from HDcam using a JH-3 and firewire into a 29.97 project.

Now, I am trying to online, again using a JH3. I have created a 29.97 HD project. However, when I fast forward the deck (manually or with FCP) the TC is not matching the original numbers. It appears to be on in the beginning, but off by 6sec at the end of tape one. I assume this is some sort of 23.98 vs 29.97 issue.

Any ideas on how to fix it?

Is the tape 23.98 or 29.97?

6 seconds on a one hour tape does not correspond with any ‘known’ mistake.
In the offline, did you do a batch capture with TC, or a ‘capture now’?
If the latter, i’m pretty sure you’re in for a lot of manual work…
Digitize with long handles, manually line up with the original.
(Make a single track of the offline, put it on a high track and put a wipe on it)

Depends on how the downconvert was done
properly done a 23.98 downconverted to DV (which is what you get via the firewire DC) the TC will match every second on the second. This requires the A frame B frame settings to be correct and that DF is NOT selected. even though 23.98 is NDF the downconvert can be DF if DF is selected.
whenever I do this for an offline I also put dual BITC ORG and PDT in the letterbox portion of the Downconvert and make a ref of the final edit with BITC so if there is any EDL hink It’s easy to find the shot I need for the conform. It also allows me to verify the TC is correct. the BITC can easily be cropped out for presentation of the offline if required.
