I’m using a small camcorder (Canon ZR 85) as a capture deck (and have been for the last year or so.) Lately I’m getting some serious TC breaks in the capture process where there are no TC breaks. The footage captures fine if I use my DVX100 as the deck. Any ideas? Should I run a cleaning tape on the camcorder? Could it be that simple?

Oh – and I have tried switching between firewire and firewire basic.

    Didn’t help.

    Thanks,

Well, it COULD be. Try it. (But only play the cleaner for UNDER 10 seconds.)

But if you DO need to REPLACE your mini-camera, I have had GREAT luck buying used miniDV “home video” camcorders and using them as spare “decks” and A-to-D-to-A video/audio converter “boxes”. I have bought MANY of these little gems at local Pawn Shops for UNDER $175 each (some for $99).
AND… If you choose a SONY or PANASONIC camcorder (except for the earliest-built versions of the Sony VX1000), those two brands will ALSO playback perfectly any DVCAM-recorded mini DV tapes as well as DV SP and DV LP (yikes!).

Even a 1 frame TC break can cause problems. Also I remember that there were problems in the past (dont know if this is still true) with DV recorded on Canon cameras in that Canon used some weird, slightly different, proprietery way of recording TC and FCP and other NLE’s would choke on this. Maybe you can search some older postings to see if this is the case.
