  • Tilta Nucleus N with side handle – what cables can I use?

    Hi all,

new user here with some (but not much) cinematography experience and a rather specific question.

I got myself a Tilta Nucleus Nano and this side handle so I can pull focus handheld on my BMPCC4K. I’ve been using this setup for a while and I’m loving it.

About a month from now, I’ll have my first gimbal shoot with a Ronin S. I already figured out how to mount the side handle to the gimbal so I can pull focus while holding the gimbal with two hands, however there’s a problem:

The micro USB to micro USB cable that came with the Nucleus N and connects the motor to the side handle is probably gonna be too short for this setup (I can’t try it out because I don’t have a Ronin S myself, I’d have to rent one, but I’m pretty sure about this).

So I thought I’d just pick up a longer cable from Amazon. But since the cable is not only used to power the motor from the battery in the side handle, but also to control the motor (the side handle doesn’t connect to it wirelessly), I’m wondering if that will work, or if the cable needs some certain specifications. I can’t seem to find any detailed info on this from Tilta.
For instance, should it or should it not be an OTG cable?

Also, how likely is it that the cable connection will mess with the gimbal balance?

Can anyone help me out with some experience in this very narrow use case?

According to this article, OTG functionality seems to be governed by the devices, not the cable:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_On-The-Go

Other than that, my guess is that a standard Micro USB cable will probably work… unless Tilta is using some proprietary form of it (if there even is such a thing)?

Here’s an article on USB, beginning from the section on Micro connectors:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_hardware#Micro_connectors

If the connectors on the stock cable look like Micro-A, Micro-B, or Micro-B SuperSpeed pictured in the link above, then a longer cable with the same connectors should work.

As far as balancing on the gimbal, would it automatically adjust to the different weight of the longer cable?

thank you for the links! makes sense to check out usb specifications of course, don’t know why i hadn’t thought of that ?

i suppose i would balance the gimbal with the cable already connected (if that’s possible). i’m just worried about the cable moving around and pulling on the camera, so i’m not sure if that whole setup is such a smart idea anyway… i was just hoping someone had tried something like this and could tell me that it does work ^^
