I’ve just read a whole long running thread on varicam and final cut 4.5. I’m a longtime DP and not totally familiar with all the relevant issues in post on varicam.

I have a decklink HD (and an HD link into the cinema display) and have been planning to import 25 fps via the HD SDI input then edit at highest quality all the way through – I shall probably go for a lacie array capable of running (it says) 187 mbps for 10 bit uncompressed. I’m preparing footage for a multi-angled HD DVD.

I’ve read a fair bit (and here thanks to Walter Biscardi for his advice off post) to input generally using the Varicam Codec, but edit graphics on an uncompressed timeline before using that as an input into the varicam timeline (at least I think!).

What is the ‘correct’ workflow to use given that I shot at 25fps and want to output at 25fps on an HDDVD – also that I have the blackmagic card – which import setting for instance? And: is 25fps the correct frame rate to output for an HD DVD given that the agreements on HD DVD’s are still being set up ?

And: is 25 fps regarded as a variable frame rate ?

forward thanks to anyone who responds – Terry Flaxton

oops – I think this is the wrong forum – I’ll move this over to the Final Cut Pro European Users Varicam Forum – apologies to everyone who doesn’t have to deal with 25p !!!!!!

[Terry Flaxton] “is 25 fps regarded as a variable frame rate ?”

    Correct.
only 24p, 30p and 60p are native frame rates that do not need conversion.

I believe there is a capture preset from Blackmagic for importing 25FPS and recognising the flagged frames. Only downside is to be dealing with uncompressed materials storage and throughput issues, but sounds like you’ve got that sorted.
