I was looking to get a checkerboard or grid type effect with the same or different pictures in each square. Can anyone point me in the right direction to go with this?

If it’s just pictures, a graphics app like Photoshop or Paint SHop Pro would be the best way to do this.
If it also involves video, then Pan/Crop, Track Motion or a combination of the two, depending on what you want to do.
A bit more detail would help us to help you even more.

I was looking to have video in some and stills in the rest. Than have them either scatter or fall randomly into a pile. Probably diving into the shallow end of the pool here. but it would be a good exercise to try to do.

Track Motion would probably be your best choice then.
You will need to place each clip/still on it’s own track and will need to use keyframes to make each one move as desired.
Ultimate S or Excalibur may have tools that will make this task easier.
