February 25, 2011 at 1:36 amAlthough this announcement is very exciting. I would wait as well. USB-3 was very exciting news for the PC, but I am not sure how many devices in the market take advantage of the connection. Be it, I do not follow the news on USB-3 that much so please excuse if I am wrong.
As for Thunderbolt? The speed seems phenomenal. But most of my investment is in SDI, Fiber & eSata external devices. And as Walter mentions, an adapter for Thunderbolt to eSata will only make that eSata as fast as it already is.
As for the new devices that will take full advantage of Thunderbolt. I can not wait to see them in all their full throttle glory at this years NAB. This years budget does allow for a new MacPro, but it most likely will not allow for that Lightning RAID everyone will be drooling over. Not to mention a new Thunderbolt Raid card.
All that said. Just like USB2 & 3, Firewire 800, eSata and others, the addition is very exciting and I can only imagine what innovations it will bring to the edit suite. This looks to be the start of another great year for Post. WOW!Victor

February 25, 2011 at 2:04 am[Brad Bussé] “I don’t see a reason why it can’t be added later via a Lightpeak PCIe card. “
I’ve read this would not be possible as the controller must be on the motherboard.
https://www.appleinsider.com/articles/11/02/24/intel_details_thunderbolt_as_exclusive_to_apple_until_2012.html“Thunderbolt ports can’t be added to existing PCs via an expansion card; Intel says the only way to have it is to buy a system or logic board that incorporates the new Thunderbolt controller chip. That’s because the Thunderbolt chip needs direct access to both the system’s video and PCI Express architecture.”
Maybe they’re wrong . . . although they say that this is what Intel says.

February 25, 2011 at 2:25 amCraig, you just rained on my parade.
So, does anyone think that Apple will make this Mac Pro product cycle shorter and announce new ones with Thunderbolt by NAB?

February 25, 2011 at 2:37 amNot that Apple has to tie a computer release with software but with the next FCS in “spring” and Lion in “summer” one might guess that the next MacPro is in there somewhere. Since Macs aren’t really “announced” in advance one has to watch supply chain reports. Also given that the bleeding edge demand/use of Thunderbolt is with “Pro” users I’d guess it’s going to be up next in MacPros with the Sandy Bridge chips as well.
Crystal Ball (or 8 Ball) says somewhere between NAB and WWDC the latest. Disclaimer, Both Balls are not known for there accuracy though.

February 25, 2011 at 2:53 amI said this in a previous thread but curious to get some more thoughts.
Having followed the rumor sites and read this thread I cant help but be excited!
However, having recently invested A LOT of money in a new system I cant help but wonder how LightPeak will effect me. In November I purchased a 12-core and added 32GB of RAM / Internal 8TB RAID 0 (OWC) and now while I am excited for the future I am also a little concerned.
With BMD video card, GTX285, Dreamcolor / HDlink, etc I invested roughly 10k into a home setup for learning & home based work but now it seems I might be behind the times in 6 months or less. How long should I hold onto this kit before its time to re-up on a MacPro or any of those other items?! Its not like I have jobs rolling in right now immediately paying for the investment unfortunately. Learning and side work at home was the expectation.
How soon before I should make a move and try to Craiglist / ebay the beast I built for a new Light Peak MacPro?!
Advice anyone?
thanks

Because I’m a nice guy and I just hate to see people suffer with antiquated equipment, I’ll give you $1,000 for your outdated Mac Pro setup and you can put the money toward a shiny new Thunderbolt Mac Pro.

There is nothing in Thunderbolt that makes your system obsolete or even outdated. For storage, it’s MiniSAS that’s still much faster. For displays, you already have DisplayPort.
Yes, TB makes for a nice connectivity option with those tiny cables – for laptops, maybe. Even then: no solution is shipping yet, and for every TBolt storage box there is another one with ExpressCard/34 connectivity.

February 25, 2011 at 3:56 amI would not suggest to anybody to run out and sell their new edit rig for ThunderBolt enabled Mac’s. If you are currently in the market for a new laptop, yes order the new Macs with Thunderbolt. You can still make plenty of money with the old gear.
At this moment it seems like the Thunderbolt technology has the most to offer with Laptops. My esata express cards are the fastest for laptops now, but you can not daisy chain them ;-( and they work great.
With the Mac Pros there is a bunch of current tech that is available now, with the bugs worked out, that is fast enough to get the job done. Another Mac Pro is on my agenda for this summer and it would be great if it is thunderbolt equipped.
But if the SSD drives are the only drives that can take full advantage of the throughput speed, up goes budget. It would be interesting to know if a Thunderbolt 4 drive SSD raid will out perform an 8 drive esata raid and what are the budget variables.
I have done to much new technology black box – you bought it – you make it work – broadcast gear engineering. With the speed of thunderbolt, there has to be a real bunch of new tech show up fast (NAB) to take advantage of this speed. And that new tech is going to be very buggy.
