Working on a huge HDV project with thousands of clips. Have broken it into 3 project segments, each with about 8

bins with 90 or so clips in each bin. Editing in straight Firewire HDV capture.

Problem is, when editing with thumbnail view in just one bin, Premiere goes back to the bin and re-renders the clip

image after every mouse click or key stroke. Have to wait almost minutes before the RAID settles down and plays

sequence. It does not do this in the text view bin, but not a handy way to edit. Standard def projects don’t do

    this.

Using a brand new Dell 7400 workstation, Dual Quad Core 3ghz, 4 megs RAM, XPpro, Firewire 800 RAID for clips,

another Firewire drive for previews/etc, and the 1.5gig NVidia card. System should not be the problem. Operator

and software must be. (I’ve been on Premiere since 5.0)

I have done all the system tweeks that Adobe advises, virtual memory, etc. Tried importing project into new one

and re-linking media, imported project into new one under new user account. All results the same. Just moved all

footage to a new drive and will try linking it from there. I shut off “Disk Indexing” on storage drives.

Does something like Cineform codec help? Is there some small tweek I’m overlooking to stop this stumbling?

Help please, before I have to fall on my sword.

That’s been an issue for as long as I can remember and I never use thumbnails. If the naming is right, you shouldn’t have to, and especially with that many clips it seems that it would be easier browsing without them.

That’s not to excuse this issue as it should have been resolved by Adobe long ago..

Do you get this same sluggishness when working in full HD using a Blackmagic or other card?

Well, if we are are talking about the Intensity, you shouldn’t, but once the project gets fairely complex the preformance rests on Premiere itself.

It also depends on how fast your drive array is. I find that for a large size 1080P project you’ll need a minimum of 4 7200 RPM drives in a RAID 0 environment to get solid performance.

I haven’t done anything over 30 minutes in HD, so you may have more on your plate than I ever had.
