Big project in FCP, lots of open bins displayed, lots of open sequences.
I switch bins, and FCP needs to show me the new thumbnails, then crashes. Not every time, but somewhat randomly. It seems like FCP reaches some thumbnail limit, and then beachball of death.

This used to happen on an older system (pre-intel chips), I thought it was just a problem with the box. But we just added a new box, latest and greatest, and it still happens.
    – It can’t be a “throw out preferences” thing because we JUST got the computer in. I don’t think it HAS preferences yet.
    – I saw this post: https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/8/1087581#1087581 and it seems to describe the issue, but it seems odd that a file would get corrupt because it’s a BRAND NEW BOX.
    – I’ve seen others have the exact same problem. how did they fix it?
    – I’ve trashed the thumbnail cache file, and even changed it’s location. Still problems.

    ANY thoughts?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi BrAd,
A brand new box with a fresh installed System/FC doesn’t means that things are ready.
In fact a fresh installed system is a big mess.
I would recommend you to make a bit of preventive-maintenace; Repairing Permissions and re-building Directories on all your HDs (DiskWarrior or TechTools).

Set your thumbnail caching on your system drive.
    Not your storage drive.

-Trash your cache files now and then.
    -Copy/paste in fresh sequence.

I’d just tried the fix that was in the link. Still problems.

I did trash the cache files, and set them to the system drive. They have been there before, but I’d moved them around some to trouble shoot.

I opened the project on another machine… And it crashed again after me really tasking it to load thumbnails. So I think that tells me that it’s a project problem, not a box problem. Unless both boxes have the same problem…

I can see how copying a sequence into a new sequence might bring back the waveforms I seem to be missing on older projects, but I’m not sure this will fix the thumbnail crashing. the project crashes when loading thumbnails, either in sequences, OR in bins.

Is there something I”m missing in FCP where it has a limit to the number of thumbs it will cache? RAM?
This is killing my workflow right now.
