I am a professional news photographer now using Avid. Our TV station is switching to Vegas Pro 8. We will mostly be editing in the field using lap-tops (so shortcuts on keyboard are important). I’m only able to do a three-point edit from trimmer (in/out set on timeline) if “Collapse Loop Region” is checked, but I can’t use “I” and “O” keys, only drag sliders (typing in exact timecode for in/out points is impractical for me). Is there a way to fix this–I don’t need, want loop regions. Also, Fit-to-Fill is disabled if Collapse Loop Region is unchecked. Thanks, Bill.

As long as you have a selection (loop region) selected both in the Trimmer and on the timeline, Fit to Fill will be enabled regardless of the Collapse Loop Region setting.

Is there a reason you don’t want a loop region / selection? If you just don’t want that section looping, turn off Loop Playback (Ctrl+Shift+L or Q — be sure to do this both in the Trimmer and on the timeline).

Thanks Rob for the feedback. I just tried it again. Unless I leave the “Collapse Loop Region When No Timeline is Present” box unchecked, it won’t do a three-point edit (only one “In” point set in trimmer), but lays the entire event in the trimmer from the In point to the end, even if I have, say, a five second selection/region in the timeline. However, if I leave this box unchecked it won’t let me set In/Outs with “I” and “O” keys, also I just checked again–Fit-to-Fill is disabled. I have to be able to set an In point, listen to a piece narration track, tweak it frame by frame, and set an out point. I can’t just scrub a loop region. Also, I want a selection, but I don’t want it to loop. I just want to continue from last Out point when I hit play again (spacebar) to cue up next piece of narration. I found that even if I do Ctrl Q that it loops unless I hit play, then stop. Thanks, Bill.

If the line selection indicator is blue, it will always loop. If it is grey, it will not loop, but will play to the end of the selected area if playback began within the selected area.
I use I/O all the time, and looping is generally turned off, while “Collapse” is disabled.

“I just want to continue from last Out point when I hit play again (spacebar) to cue up next piece of narration. I found that even if I do Ctrl Q that it loops unless I hit play, then stop.”

    I think I know what’s going on here. 🙂

Technically, it’s not “looping.” When I say loop, I mean this:

With a loop region selected and Looped Playback turned on, you start playback. Vegas gets to the end of the loop region of its own volition, and immediately returns to the beginning of the loop region to play it again. Rinse, lather, repeat until something intervenes.

What’s happening in your case, I believe, is that you’ve started playback, gone as far as you needed, and hit the spacebar. Default behavior (if I recall correctly) is for Vegas to STOP playback and return to whatever position you started playback from. This happens regardless of where the loop region starts or whether there even is one or if Looped Playback is On or Off.

To remedy this, you can change the behavior of the spacebar so that instead of Stopping, it Pauses. Go to Options > Preferences > General tab and check the box next to “Make Spacebar and F12 Play / Pause instead of Play / Stop.” It’s around 1/2 to 3/4 of the way down.

Maybe I’m misreading you, Bill, but are you trying to use Fit-to-Fill in conjunction with three point editing — or are those two separate issues?

If you are, you can’t do that, dude. 😉 As I understand it (and I’m not a pro, so maybe I don’t), three point editing involves creating a selection on the timeline and a single point in the Trimmer. You add the media, and the NLE (here, Vegas) decides how much to add based on the selection timeline.

When you do this, Fit-to-Fill is disabled because it’s not applicable (not anything to do with the “Collapse Loop Region…” setting).

Fit-to-Fill looks at the selection on the timeline and the selection in the Trimmer (so you need both an In and Out point in the Trimmer, too) and stretches or compresses the media you’re adding in order to fit the timeline selection.

Thanks Douglas, so if I go back to my narration track in the trimmer window, my last selection (with a gray box) is still selected. I have to drag the cursor out of the selection area to continue playing ahead? Also, I have two channels of audio recorded, can I just listen to one channel in the trimmer? Thanks, Bill.
