thoughts on tin cans and cuda
So the new Mac Pro’s are coming out, and I’m starting to warm up to the idea of getting one.
In their infinite wisdom, Apple seems that they are no longer willing to support CUDA expansion. And unless we find that we can slap a PCIe expander onto one of the PCIe3 graphics card slots (if they’re not welded on), it looks like I’m going to have to dump my NVIDIA investment.
I guess the question is, does Apple still have enough industry sway that all the CUDA based app and plugin developers will rewrite everything for OpenCL support?
Obviously Apple feels so, or they would have just canned the pro line altogether.Based on an encouraging letter from Grant at BM, it seems BM is onboard for this transition. Adobe is as well. Which just leaves lots of smaller little apps that are CUDA based. I’m having a hard time separating sentiment from perspective at this point.
