So the new Mac Pro’s are coming out, and I’m starting to warm up to the idea of getting one.

In their infinite wisdom, Apple seems that they are no longer willing to support CUDA expansion. And unless we find that we can slap a PCIe expander onto one of the PCIe3 graphics card slots (if they’re not welded on), it looks like I’m going to have to dump my NVIDIA investment.

I guess the question is, does Apple still have enough industry sway that all the CUDA based app and plugin developers will rewrite everything for OpenCL support?
Obviously Apple feels so, or they would have just canned the pro line altogether.

Based on an encouraging letter from Grant at BM, it seems BM is onboard for this transition. Adobe is as well. Which just leaves lots of smaller little apps that are CUDA based. I’m having a hard time separating sentiment from perspective at this point.

    Thoughts and opinions?

[Blase Theodore] “I guess the question is, does Apple still have enough industry sway that all the CUDA based app and plugin developers will rewrite everything for OpenCL support?”

It’s not just Apple here; basically everyone except NVIDIA is better off with a vendor-neutral standard in the long run, and knows it. CUDA is a bit more mature, so some developers are still holding off, but OpenCL 2.0 (which should hit next year) will help here.

We have to wait and see how D700 holds up against Titans.

Until then it is just pure gossip.

Maybe i sound to old and sceptical but real world test in Resolve defines it
as we ave many times seen that on paper numbers nice numbers do not have to be
    good in real life.

Maybe good Linux box will be also nice idea.

agree with margus and think it’s going to be several months before we know if they are good for resolve and good value overall. my guess is that, if you want long term performance, you’ll have to drop the $10K for the full spec machine and hope it can handle 4K, 6K, 8K, etc. well into the future.

i’ve been running a windows box cheaply and happily for 2 years now, and only miss prores encoding. if apple is going to fart on us with FCPX, they could at least open up their codec.

[Margus Voll] “Maybe good Linux box will be also nice idea.”

Eventually that would help with DCI-workflow, but others have discovered one of the Murphy corollaries: “There are no perfect solutions, only ones that are more subtly wrong…”, in that LInux boxes have real trouble with the ProRes family, and that is one of the mainstay codecs of the present.

I could see a Linux box with a trash can MacPro hanging off the back of it as a work around. 😉

If apps integration do not get better then we have can with half the promised performance.

So yes small can for prorez may be good option siting on the back of linux version 😉
