Posted by Charles Martin on August 25, 2010 at 12:51 pm

I am relatively new to this forum as I am relatively new to Vegas. I am a recent convert after editing on Avid for 7 years.

I really enjoy Vegas ..in particular how easily it works with other formats..in particular the EX material that i shoot on.

I’ve been doing more editing of late and a couple of questions have come–I am trying to find out if some of the things I used to do with Avid can be done with Vegas?

    1. In Avid you can create any number of different ‘timelines’ within a project…..this is especially useful if you want to create different versions….shorter, longer…whatever….
Is it possible to operate different timelines within a Vegas project?

    2. Removing video dissolves/transitions. I understand how to add a dissolve/transition…but having problems ‘removing’. According to the guide you simply click on the area of transition ..press Ctrl and press / on the numberic keyboard… i don’t have a numberic keyboard but when i press the / nothing happens…is there another way to easily remove a transition?

These two issues seem to be causing me the most difficulty so any advice would be much appreciated.

    thanks…

    1. use nested VEG files (see the help file for full details)

    2. Right-click the transition and chose Transition – Insert Crossfade. BTW, it’s / on the numeric keypad – not CTRL-/. Even laptops without a separate numeric keypad have this key. You just have to turn on numlock and press the appropriate key that’s mapped to “/”.

No. You can nest projects within other projects which allows you to re-assemble material into several lengths. For example you can have an opening and closing as separate projects and drop them into another project and add different lengths of content between them. Thus you are reusing the opening and closing projects as if they were just another piece of media without ever having to render them and still being able to edit and change them if you need to. Not quite as nice as multiple timelines but that’s as close as Vegas gets.

You can remap that to anything you want. Go to Options | Customize Keyboard… and select TrackView then Edit.ConvertTransitionToCut and remap it to any key combination you’d like (perhaps even the same one Avid used?)

The numlock did the trick! thanks …however i did have to hold CTRL while pressing the / which is on the same key as number zero on my laptop…
I will take John’s advice and probably-remap so another key serves this function….
    Many thanks..

Thanks very helpful John… I managed to remap fine… push of one button and dissolve is removed!
Another issue i forgot to raise…Audio Dissolves…. in Avid you can highlight a whole track of audio and insert a short audio dissolve over every single edit—very useful for taking out any clicks and makes for a nice smooth track.
Is there a way of achieving this in Vegas? I’ve tried to insert an audio dissolve in between audio tracks but not having any luck.

You can also open several instances of Vegas, copy and paste from one timeline to another. Hope this helps, Danny Hays

Vegas automatically inserts audio dissolves even for cuts so you should not be hearing any clicks from audio in Vegas unless you manually remove those short dissolves. Are you hearing clicks?

actually….no…i’m not hearing clicks. I figured it was simply because the audio was meshing together ok…sometimes it does..and sometimes it doesn’t so with AVID i used the ‘audio dissolve’ technique in between most cuts…
So you are saying that for any basic cut Avid automatically inserts the audio dissolve? …thats incredible….

I think you meant “Vegas does” and yes… Vegas does add slight dissolves to smooth the audio automatically. Zoom all the way into a cut on the timeline and you’ll see what I mean.

yes….i meant…’vegas does’.. Really appreciate you pointing this out….in fact I had zoomed in to an edit recently and saw a small audio dissolve…and i knew i hadn’t added a video dissolve..i just figured it was a slip of the finger…so this explains it!
    very useful little feature…

Charles, that’s a feature that’s been built into Vegas since (probably) the very beginning.
It can be modified by going into Options – Preferences – Editing.
The setting you’re looking for is “Quick fade length for audio events”.
By default, it’s set to 10 ms.
