    Hey Everyone,

I’m looking at getting an 8 drive unit and while I’ve always had great luck with the Wiebe units, I wanted to see what people are thinking about the RTX units before I spend the $$$.

They’ve been selling them for at least a year now, but I can’t seem to find any reviews online of these boxes.

If not Wiebe, what would be your suggestions for a similar 8 drive Raid 5?

I use Cal Digit storage, the 8 drive version would be the HD Pro, though I use the 4 drive HD Element. Great product, great tech support. If you want expandability though, Walter loves the Maxx Digital Expando Chassis. Great speed, and you can daisy chain more units just like you would firewire drives.

The CalDigit HDOne is a less expensive 8-bay solution, which I recommend highly. See my review at https://library.creativecow.net/articles/weiss_roth_david/caldigit_HDOne.php.

But to answer your question without prejudice, the wiebe RTX units are great, functional and they do what they say they do. I have an early unit which was not as ruggedized as the newer versions. But for RAID 5 I’m not sure they offer real benefit, unless you need to change all x number of drives at the same time as you change projects. If a drive fails they make it super easy to install a new one, but how often will that happen? I use mine for swapping bare drives for backup, mostly.

Thanks for the input. I think the main benefit I’m looking for is reliability vs cost. Just trying to make sure the Wiebe stuff is reliable for Raid 5 or 6.

I’ve had a Medea 10 drive RTRX for a bunch of years which has never given me so much as a hiccup, but sadly, I can’t afford something similar this time around.

    cheers!
