March 4, 2009 at 3:35 pmThanks a lot for your encouraging words Rafael, that’s very kind
I knew it was going be a challenging since the day I took the project, and sometimes this whole thing sounds like “gebrish” to me, I appreciate all the help and advices I’m getting here because I want to hear from experience people in addition to the reading and testing that we are doing.
on top of all the confusion we are dealing with right now with the HD format we are going to be working with a FC server, so we have that too to worry about!!! so yeah… it is challengingI want to make sure that we are working the right way so that we wont have to deal with technicalities too much and put all of our energy on the creative side of our job.
I think I will go with native material because we are going to have a huge amount of “rushes” we are going to be working on a series of 25 documentaries!!
we are going to purshase the AJA Kona 3 because we have lots of Archive material that is in different SD formats. -

March 4, 2009 at 4:45 pmHi Tel,
I understand that you are concerned with such big project with a new format.
Again I suggest you to have a look to the SONY Cinealta forum: https://forums.creativecow.net/forum/sonycinealtahd
There is a bunch of people that really knows about EX-1/3.
People that works with Mac or PC. Most part of them works native EX-1.
I really encourage you to ask to Craig Seaman, Don Greening or Michael Palmer.
They are working with EX-1 since the first cameras were released.
Then you can make your own conclusions.

Hi Gary,
This software don’t let you but to rewrap the .mp4 as EX-1.mov.
Is an old piece of software and SONY recommends the SONY Transfer software better than this one.
I don’t see a way to capture ProRess other than with a video card via HD/SD-SDI.

March 5, 2009 at 1:38 amThanks Gary, but I think have misinterpreted my question here. We’re not debating the existence of the Log and Transfer plug in (heck I even quoted the product code PDZK-LT1) rather its ability (or not) to be able to transcode to ProRes during transfer. At present my understanding is that it does not ie like the XDCAM Transfer app it only rewraps the MXF source as MOV.

March 5, 2009 at 2:27 amIt’s not a myth, there is a quality difference when you work with Long GOP material vs. getting out of that format into ProRes or DVCPro HD.
If you capture direct to ProRes via baseband (Kona, Decklink, MXO2 etc) then it’s probable you may see some qualitative advantage due to the higher quality of the dedicated decompression hardware in the playback device versus software only decompression, but if you ingest native and/or transcode in software then it surely won’t make a jot of difference whether you transcode to ProRes at the beginning or at the end of the workflow.
There is of course no argument that working in an intraframe intermediate codec is always going to provide better overall performance than working in an interframe codec (always assuming one has a storage system with the speed and capacity necessary to deal with the higher data rates involved).

March 5, 2009 at 9:58 amwell I can say for sure that you cannot transcode to ProRes while Log and Transfer, I have been looking for that option for days now, and downloaded everything that is possible to download and still can’t find that option.
God it feels good, after all the silly questions I’ve been asking I am finally able to contribute a piece of information!!!
