March 4, 2009 at 12:52 pm[Andy Mees] “Walter, you’ve stated this as fact a couple of times now … with the greatest respect I think you may be have been misinformed on this point. Or it could be me. The only Log and Transfer plugin I am aware of for XDCAM EX ingest to FCP is Sony’s PDZK-LT1. The last time I checked this plugin appeared to allow transfer and rewrap of the camera native clips to quicktime but not transcode to ProRes … that is something you would have to do after the fact. “
Unfortunately I don’t have any EX-1 or EX-3 material here at this time. I recently completed a television pilot that was all shot on the 1 and 3 and brought everything in as ProRes. When I get some more material in I’ll try the process again.

March 4, 2009 at 1:06 pmThanks Walter
Just for clarity, I’m interested specifically whether the L&T plug in allows direct transcode to / ingest as ProRes … obviously the realtime baseband ingest to ProRes via Kona or similar is a given. Thing is I’ve stated myself time and again that direct transcode of XD EX via L&T is not an option, and that XDT is a superior software for handling XD ingest to FCP… if direct transcode to ProRes is actually possible then its time I stopped saying it wasn’t (plus if the L&T plugin can handle this transcode then it is almost certainly the superior ingest option as compared to XDT which does not).

To say it simply, working with Long GOP formats can be a challenge.

March 4, 2009 at 1:57 pmHi Tel,
Editing XDCAm is not much different than editing DV. The MPEG-2 long GOP structure is not a problem at all for any medium performance Mac.
I’ve been editing for one year with a MBP and with some e-SATA drives and works wonderful.
Just a couple of weeks ago I had a problem with the MBP and (after one year sleeping) I’ve updated my old G5 (2004) were probably I’ll finish the projects that I started in the MBP. Works great.[tel jaba] “is there one source we could learn from? a course? a book? anything?”
Just make a try with some EX-1 footage. The workflow can not be easier: Download and edit.I don’t say that going to ProRess is not an option at all.
If you can capture Proress through an AJA or BM, sure is the best way to go from the 8b/420 of the EX-1 to the 10b/422 of Proress. Also an AJA or BM will provide you the best downscaling when you go to SD.
But this don’t need always to be done on capture.
I’m working in a project with some 190 GB EX-1 footage. If I would capture Proress, I would end up with some 450 GB in my HD.
I will edit in EX-1 and when my sequence will be ready, I will up-load again the sequence footage to the SxS cards. then i will capture that as Proress.
I will convert some half hour footage, not the whole 12 hours footage.
And this because I already have the AJA. No point to expend 2 or three Ks in a card to do that.
Just don’t worry Tel. You can ask here, and also you can look for help in the SONY XDCAM forum here in the COW.

Steve.
That sounds like you’ve never had worked with XDCAM.

March 4, 2009 at 2:22 pmNo it doesn’t. It is saying that for someone who is inexperienced like Tel and his editors, they are better off editing in an intra frame codec.
With my setup and experience, I can handle any format up to 2K in and out.
There is no reason to make your life more difficult than it has to be.

I can say from experience both HDV and XDCAM formats can be trying. We tested both before moving forward with conversion of both formats to either 8bit SD (for SD material), DVCPro HD or ProRes for editing. Much smoother process and cleaner end result.

I think that for somebody with no much experience will be easier working native EX-1 than trying a workflow that pass by converting all the footage through a high-end video capture card.
The “Long GOPs” is another of the FC myth. Old fashioned.

Not really, but if it suits your workflow, that’s fine. I would never recommend the long GOP workflow to anyone. It’s not a myth, there is a quality difference when you work with Long GOP material vs. getting out of that format into ProRes or DVCPro HD.
But again, if it suits your workflow, keep doing what you’re doing.
