    Bob,

From the specs this is HDCAM only not SR.

Sony recognises that your needs as a programme maker will vary depending upon the type of programme being made. This has driven the development of a multi-format high definition product offering, including HDV for entry-level HD operation, HDCAM for mainstream and prestige productions and HDCAM SR for productions where only the ultimate quality will suffice.

    REPLY
Does this paragraph not give you the impression that it does not playback HDCAM SR – or is this my mis-interpretation. This is not a Sony blurb, it’s from this companies site – so I may be confused (as I often am). The above statement makes me believe that this is a multi format hi definition product.

    Bob,

It is all listed on the specifications page which states the playback and recording format are HDCAM not HDCAM SR.

The paragraph you refer to is just more generic marketing hype.

[tony salgado] “It is all listed on the specifications page which states the playback and recording format are HDCAM not HDCAM SR.”

Yep, it appears that way, even right below the paragraph that Bob describes:

The HDW-1800 operates at the frame rates used for prestige and mainstream content creation and distribution. It offers HDCAM recording and playback at 1080/50i, 1080/59.94i, 1080/25P, 1080/29.97P, 1080/23.98P and 1080/24P.

    And from the Specs page:

    Recording Format: HDCAM (1080/50i, 59.94i, 25P, 29.97P, 23.98P, 24P)
    Replay Formats: HDCAM (1080/50i, 59.94i, 25P, 29.97P, 23.98P, 24P)

Well, after I realized it had the 1800 designation, that should have warned me. I have the UVW-1800 Beta Machine which of course does “everything” the BVW series can do except edit, insert, slow mo, record to Beta (oxide) tape, jog, shuttle and a few other things. But other than that, it’s “exactly” like the BVW machines!

    People, People please

All you have to do is read the specs it is right there in black and white.

No deception by Sony just marketing hype to only mislead those who read into something which is not really there.

    The specs cannot lie.

HDCAM is not HDCAM SR period .

It’s like the engineers always tell me at NAB, “The marketing guys tell everyone what the product can do, but they never ask us.”

You know one question I have about this deck is why is it only available in Europe? I tried looking it up in the States and I don’t see it anywhere. Is this even going to “cross the Pond?”

    Hi All,

I look through the specs & it indicated RS-422A protocol.
I take it as this VTR cannot handle Insert editing mode.
    Am I right about this?

    Cheers,
    Ben
