My company has been looking into getting a new editing system. We previously had Discreet Edit, and now they don’t make it anymore. So we have come to the all important time when client needs are getting difficlt to meet, technologically speaking. We are looking at Avid Xpress Pro.

The Avid web page is very usefull, but lets face it nobody tells you their systems problems when they are trying to sell you a system.

Can anyone tell me what issues, or compliments about their Avid Xpress Pro system when working with the following items.

    1. Betacam.
    2. Titlemotion.
    3. Timecode.

    Any help would be helpfull

According to the Titlemotion website, you can use it as a plug in with Avid Xpress, so you shouldn’t have any problems.

As for Betacam and timecode, Avid systems work with professional decks just like every other NLE. I’ve never had a problem with a Betacam deck or timecode in 8 years of using Avid systems.

There are limitations to Avid, but without knowing your workflow, I can’t tell you if they’ll affect you or not. For example, Avid doesn’t support HDV yet (they say it’s coming within weeks), but if you don’t need HDV right now, then that shouldn’t matter to you.

    Hope that helps.

    good luck,
    Carl

There is no problem working with Betacam or timecode, including broken timecode – something other NLE manufacturers used to choose to ignore at the peril of the editor.

As far as Titlemotion is concerned, there is a version available as an Avid AVX plugin. How well plugins work varies by developer. I don’t know anyone using Titlemotion with Avid though. I contacted Inscriber when it was first released for Avid to do a review of it here, but that communication never amounted to anything and I did not pursue it further. I could be proven wrong, but I don’t think it is a big seller. It’s biggest audience is probably amongst the Edit*tor refugees who fled to Avid use it.

Avid now includes Marquee with Xpresspo – another pig to learn, like Titlemotion, but possibly more capable and completely integrated. I have not yet taken the plunge into Marquee, but it is beckoning me.

gee….don’t make sound like Avid HDV is just going to be any old editor..it sounds like the HDV version of Pro is the best HDV solution yet by any software company. and it will be a free upgrade from PRO.

Hell, I think Avid is the greatest NLE in history, but I didn’t want to sound biased. 🙂

    adios,

I learned the basics of marquee at the agency I used to work for, on an Avid MC Adrenaline. It takes a little bit to get used to it, especially if you’re used to AfterFX, but because it’s integrated it makes it really nice for basic titling. Just a word of warning though–you can do some really nice stuff with lights and shadows and 3D titling in Marquee, but as soon as you add the light and shadows your render time becomes ridiculous. What’s nice, though, is that you can add your shadow in Avid after marquee. At least you could on the Adrenaline. Definitely worth learning though.
