Previously I’ve only ever used Sony Vegas, and I’ve been trying to 3D composite in Sony Vegas and have been finding myself limited and I pretty much reached the point in vegas where “it’s not enough”, like theres nothing left, and you need more learn. One thing I always liked about it though is that it’s so user friendly and easy to use, that’s why I haven’t been moving to new apps, because I really hate learning curves, I like to know EVERYTHING about a program, so if I’m going to pick one up I’m going to have to read through everything and it’ll be really annoying lol

so anyway, do you think it’d be hard for a Sony Vegas user to start out in After Effects? (I do know I tried Adobe Premier 5.0 back in the day and got super confused, but I hadn’t ever used a NLE then, so I don’t know…)

I personally found AE very easy to pick up, but I’d been using Premeire for a bit and there’s enough crossover to be handy, no-idea if Vegas has any similarities. I’d guess any NLE experience or even general graphics/computer experience is a plus but ultimately I think it depends how much time you’re prepared to put into learning it, and how quickly it ‘clicks’ for you.

AE however is a big program. Theres a lot to learn and although there are shortcuts and common solutions, I’d doubt there’s many here who would claim to know everything. If you want to get a good feel for what the programs like I’d recommend watching a few video tutorials. Videocopilot.net has a great basics series which would teach you how the program works, or just take a look at some of his tutorials and the creative cow podcasts. You might not have any idea what’s going on in some of the more advanced ones, but it’ll give you a great idea of what’s possible with AE and how people actually use it.

Only in after effects do children get to pick and whip their parents.

    Hey, thanks for your reply!

I’m mainly wanting After Effects for 3D compositing, I just saw the price for CS4 and ack… I’m wondering if there are other versions *earlier version* I can buy for cheaper, that give the same amount of features in the 3D environment?
