Thin black pixel line when exporting (looks like a thin drop shadow)
Posted by Alessio Rattazzi on August 7, 2023 at 2:01 pmWhen I export files from After Effects, it always creates thin black pixel lines on edges on the vector shapes (looks like a thin drop shadow). In the attached example I exported in H.264 – mp4. Can you tell me what this is due to and if there is a way to get the vector shapes as clean as in after effects comp?

August 7, 2023 at 2:57 pmis this when you make AE shapes or illustrator shapes? If AE, maybe you have stroke enabled and its just a very small value?

August 7, 2023 at 3:52 pmHi Andy, thanks for you time!
Actually is doing it with both; illustrator and After Effects shapes. here I tried to create a shape from scratch in after effects and make sure it has no stroke assigned. Yet there are still black borders in export (right split screen) -

August 7, 2023 at 3:59 pmi see, could you upload an ae file? does it still occur when rendered to ProRes 4444 or similar?

August 7, 2023 at 4:43 pmWhat are your export settings & original comp size? Are you compressing the file? Is there a background or are these shapes being exported with an alpha channel over transparency?

August 8, 2023 at 12:05 pmdear Andy and John
Thanks a lot for your time. Here is the After Effects file (it gives the problem when exporting even if there is no motion), the exported mp4 and the export settings.
Thank you very much Alessio

August 8, 2023 at 2:38 pmThank you very much, these settings solve the problem! The only thing is the file weight, what format would you recommend for a lowres export or for social media if mp4 causes the problem?
thanks again
best regards
Alessio

August 8, 2023 at 2:56 pmnice work John. Alessio, you should render from AE at Pro Res (my preference), and use media encoder or similar to compress to MP4, the AE MP4 is for quick outputs not finals. But happy you have been given a solution!

August 8, 2023 at 4:07 pmActually, even if I export with John’s settings and then convert the file to mp4 with media encoder, it still generates the black line. Never mind, the main problem is solved. Now I’ll do some testing to find a satisfactory lowres 🙂
Thanks a lot for your time and help!
Best

August 11, 2023 at 3:45 pmIt’s all in the compression settings.
Basically aliasing is the issue.
