There’s little traffic regarding OSX (10.5.3) and QT (7.5), is that good or bad?
Posted by Todd Reid on June 11, 2008 at 2:35 pmUsually there are many posts when a QT update comes along.
Can that mean that people aren’t having any trouble with it (yet)?
Or are we all so gun shy that we hesitate to update?
I know I am, my system’s working fairly solid right now. With an OSX (10.5.3) and QT (7.5) update waiting,
I’m anxious to hear from the brave cutting edge people who are totally current.Anyone?
Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?

It’s possible that people have finally started to heed the advice given here hundreds of times, warning users to clone their system drives before installing any update or upgrade, because it means never having to be “gun shy” and never having to post zillions of messages here wondering how to deal with the aftermath of a funky Apple release.
So, why don’t you get in the habit of cloning your system drive so you no longer have to be gun shy?

June 11, 2008 at 3:19 pmgood advise, that I’ve heard many times. I guess its time to actually heed it.
Sometimes I long for the days when a staff of engineers were at my beck and call,
and would keep the 2 rooms full of equipment running smooth for a linear edit suite.
If anything went wrong, I’d make a phone call, then go get some coffee or dinner, come back and magically things would work again. 😉When’s THAT update coming to FCP???????
What software do you suggest for cloning?
So it basically works this way, right???
clone entire mac drive, to external harddrive.
update, test. If I notice problems, I use the software (?) to bring the clone back over and
therefore would be back to square one, before the update.Any pitfalls to be aware of?

June 11, 2008 at 3:38 pmCarbon Copy Cloner has almost always worked for me. I say almost always, because once my clone wouldn’t boot, but that was due to the fact that I forgot to erase the disk before creating the clone. Now, CCC has an erase before cloning feature, so that has become a none issue.
Just use the CCC defaults and the erase feature and cloine to any cheap firewire drive, then test to make certain it boots. In the event of a bad update, you simply boot from the clone and clone that back to your system drive. Of course, make certain that any FCP project files that you’ve worked on since the clone have been stored in another location so your latest version doesen’t get lost in te shuffle…

June 11, 2008 at 3:51 pmJust downloaded CCC, seems pretty straight forward.
I do have one clarification, I think the answer is yes, but thought I’d ask anyway.
The target drive should be erased (as you suggested), which means I need to use a drive ONLY for backup, and it can not contain anything else besides the clone, right?
meaning I couldn’t use one of my existing drives with data on it,
even if it has enough space to store the clone?
I should clean off a drive or purchase a new one only for this purpose.
Makes sense, but just confirming. -

June 11, 2008 at 4:12 pmI’d recommend using a dedicated drive, simply because it means no thinking and because you’re creating a boot drive. I’m kind of into creating no-brainers on this type of stuff, so that I can use my brain on more creative things. That being said, I guess you could create a boot partition, which is more or less a separate virtual drive.

If running a KOna card and a Mac Pro, it’s actually recommended to update to 10.5.3 (not sure of QT 7.5, I’d stay away from that).

If you are running an ioHD, a driver update is necessary as 10.5.3 wonked something up with firewire audio.

I’ve seen it cause issues with Matrox’s as well.

June 11, 2008 at 5:40 pmThanks for the head’s up.
I’m using the AJAHD, and this just saved me some time and stress.
Now I know to update that too.Am going to clone THIS time,
but still good to know more facts as I’m between projects and can’t be down too long. -

June 11, 2008 at 5:42 pmAlso, I meant to mention SuperDuper for cloning.
SuperDuper will allow a bootable clone on top of a Time Machine backup. That’s the best of both worlds right there:
