I have read a few posts on running FCP HD on a MacBook Pro (I currently have a G5 2×1.8/4Gb only scoring 1447 on Geekbench! as well as my wife’s MBP 2×2.16/1Gb that I sometimes borrow scoring 2733 on Geekbench!). Strangely, I don’t have the feeling of speed when I run FCP on her MBP! Anyway, now it is time for me to get my own MBP.
I am looking at getting the matte HD screen. I am afraid about reflexion with the glossy screen as I will often work at remote outdoor locations. As I have never seen one in South Africa, I also wonder if the text will not not be to small on the HD screen at full HD. Any opinion on that?
Now that in South Africa, I have to wait 5 weeks max to get that special factory built hd screen, what is the best hd to get with the MBP?
Regarding the ram, I intend to buy the MBP with only 2 Gb and then buy the 4 Gb separately so I can throw the 2 Gb in my wife’s MBP. I heard these ddr2 ram are compatible.
In SA, only the 2.5GHz are available. I guess that there is no big deal between these and the new 2.6 GHz?
I have recently bought a Seritek 2-SM2-E dual eSATA adapter and I intend to get a decent RAID to play/edit full hd comfortably. What should I get?
Is there anything else that I need to think about before ordering the machine?

Do you need to capture/monitor from/to any decks/devices?
An ioHD is perfect for this.
As far as storage, do you need speed, portability, protection?
2.5 vs 2.6 is negligible. Don’t give it another thought.
I prefer matte screens as well. It’s totally a personal preference, though.

Painfully small. Really. I thought that was because I’m old (50) and I started to use glasses no long ago.

I think that when we start with a faster computer, we feel the increase in speed the first few days. When we get the use to it, it seems that there is no computer fast enough.About the raid I can not help you. Same than you, I need to buy one, but I have no much clear what kind.

I am mainly a photographer but as I am directing the photography of a movie, I will travel during my scouting trips in Namibia, Botswana and Western South Africa with a P2 HVX-200. I shoot in 1920p and capture from P2 via the card adapter. I have not use the MBP yet as a live full hd monitor. Is that possible?
Regarding external HD, I need speed for editing full hd (basic of course) so eSATA is the way to go and I already have the adapter. I also need mobility. I was thinking to have 2 drives in a small Pelican case with some nice fan to cool them down. That is for storage and I can swap ,the hd. However I also want to be able to play full hd in prores (I am waiting for my FCP6 upgrade), so I guess that for playing that without dropping frames, I need at least 2 drives working together in RAID 0 or 3? This is where I get lost. I also want to know what I can easily build myself to drop the price down. G-Drives are nice looking but their price is like apple to pcs!
Any suggestions/advise welcome…

Paul, if you are planing on using the Seritek adapter to attach eSATA drives then you will not have access to the slot for the P2. You could get a drive system that attaches by both FW and sata. Attach by FW to transfer P2 and then attach by sata to edit.

With something like Scopebox it is.

The ultimate in speed and portability is the Sonnet F2. Totally kick butt.

Raid0 is speed, raid3 is redundancy. you are going to have a hard time finding a redundant array that connect to eSATA. Bring back up drives to offload to.
