The tools of the trade

Being new to video editing and looking on what to do / what to get / what to learn I am really wondering about the editing tools.
From an outside view there are three types of software:
Home editing: iMovie, pinnacle studio
Semi pro: fcp express, adobe premiere, Sony
Pro: fcp and avid studioMy question really is when to make the switch from one category to another… Especially fromthe semi pro to the pro category, or in other words what are the limitations of eg. Premiere that justify a move towards eg. FCP.
Quite difficult to see for a beginner,

Premiere Pro is Pro. There’s nothing about it that isn’t pro. Some might argue that it’s supplied encoding system is not pro, and that might be true, but that’s not editing, that’s encoding, two different things.
You simply get the MainConcept MPEG Pro plugin, and than you have full-control ‘pro’ encoding.
You combine all of the other app’s that Adobe offers, especially After Effects, and you’ll be in great shape. Although, you may also want to add a 3D modeling app, for that sort of creation.Vince
