  • “The system is low on memory” while rendering

    Posted by Kevin Kim on July 8, 2009 at 9:14 pm

    While rendering as wmv (6 mbps HD 720-30p) in 1280×720, The following error message pops up after about 10%

    “The system is low on memory. You may be able to reduce memory usage by closing other applications”

    This still happens when I have no other applications running in the background. It shouldn’t be a problem for my computer (windows xp, C2D, 2 gb ram) as I’ve never had any problems like this. I also have tried restarting the computer and checking my ram with memtest (which came up with no errors). I am rendering the video files directly from the hard drive of my camcorder (which means the camcorder is connected to my computer and I work with the video files while they are still on the camera). But I doubt that is the problem. Please help me out.

    There’s a few things that cause this, including, that you don’t have enough memory. But 2GB of RAM on an XT system should be more than enough.

    This sometimes happens when you have a large JPG or PNG image on the timeline. You can also get this error if your pagefile RAM is badly fragged, but rebooting should fix that. Also, a hard-disk more than 3/4 full can also cause this because there may not be enough contiguous space on the hard disk for your pagefile to swap out.

    Try making your pagefile a fixed size. This way the Windows pagefile management wouldn’t be able to generate this error, and you would see a tiny improvement in disk performance. You do this by setting the min and max pagefile size to the same value.

    If you are running Norton Antivirus, then you have a resource hog on your hands.

    Hope this helps.

    Have 2 problem;
    Problem 1;
    I render video (10min) from Vegas 9, in format AVCHD 1090×1080 50i to play from stick or DVD on my Playstation 3. I try copy video on hard disc of ps3, and video play god, but in 7min sound play fine, but video is to slow. And every time. When i play on computer, is everithing ok!

    Problem 2;
    Somethimes, when i render, i in customise project select Mp4, or M2TS..; or when i put 10 filters on clip, rendering stops after 70% and says that is low memory… I waching “Task manager” when render, and is no over 2GB of ram… (i have 4GB! (3- windows))
    Processor is 3,0 dual core,.,,

    Thanks for your advice, but I do not have any image on my timeline, just videos. My HD is less than 3/4 full (300gb), and I have set my min and max pagefile to the same size (about 3000). Also I do not have Norton antivirus.

    I solved it by setting the ram to 0 in the video tab of preferences.

    Thanks Kevin, Stephen.

    I just had this exact problem. I rebooted, shelled out of AVG and set the memory usage to 0, and it is rendering….

    Thanks!

    Your fix (set the ram to 0 in the video tab of preferences) worked spectacularly for me! THANK YOU!

    I had spent countless hours trying other fixes which didn’t work.

    How did it ever occur to try this?

    And, does Sony know they are sending out software with this faulty default value?

    How do you do this? You say in the Video tab of Preferences, but where do I find Preferences? Thanks for your time.

    >>Processor is 3,0 dual core,.,,

    For AVCHD, upgrade at least to Q9650 Quad Core. Also, Cineform NeoScene helps ($99.00 Videoguys).

    For low memory errors, here is a reprint:

    Rendering Issues Low on Memory
    Lots of people are having rendering issues “Low on memory” in VP9.0 and 9.0a. Editing WMV files seems to make it worse, but others have this problem even without .WMV. (I was having issues rendering AVCHD in 9.0, but 9.0a resolved my issues.)

    On a fresh install of Vista x64 Ultimate, with a 3.0GHz CoreDuo Quad with 8GB of RAM and a 12GB paging file, I still have to set Dynamic RAM preview to 0 before I render (so I just leave it there). Then I reboot the machine (to defrag the paging file), close all other unnecessary applications, and kill Anti-virus/Internet Security. On VP 9.0a, it seems to render for me to Internet 16:9 Widescreen HD 30p. However, it will not render for me in MPEG-2.
    There are several other folks on this forum actively experiencing “low memory errors” on rendering. One of them may be experiencing a problem related to using a Dell (which uses non-standard parts), but the others report that they did not have this error until they upgraded to 9.0a (i.e., they did not experience it before). They believe it is likely a bug in how VP9.0a handles memory.

    Also check your paging file, and set it both the initial and maximum settings at 1.5 times the size of your RAM If that does not help, you may be looking at a fresh reload of Windows, to see if that helps.
    If your windows is fresh, and your Vegas is fresh, and still you are having issues, I would recommend reporting the problem to Sony, https://www.custcenter.com/cgi-bin/sonypictures.cfg/php/enduser/ask.php, so their software engineers can work on a bug fix for 9.0b. Please give them as much information as you can regarding your system (processor, RAM, system specs, etcetera), your source material (.JPEGs, PNG’s, .avi, .mov, .wmv, whatever), and what you are trying to render to (Main Concept AVC, Sony AVC, Internet 16:9 HD 30p, MPEG-2, etcetera).

    I am far from an expert, and this is the extent of my knowledge on this issue. I hope it helps.
