The Ripple Effect in the Ripple Training Intro
Posted by Dave George on July 29, 2011 at 12:59 pmAnyone ever take one of the Ripple Training tutorials? They have an intro sequence where a bunch of little balls swarm into a 3D plane and then ripple dramatically. Anyone know how to do that in Motion?
I’m not necessarily looking for step-by-step details but maybe just point me in the right direction.

July 29, 2011 at 1:31 pmI would take a look at the “Droplet” filter. You can use multiple instances of that to create a ripple effect.
Make the array of dots by replicating a little white circle.
You will probably need to render out a flat 2D version of the ripple effect, and then bring that video back into your project in order to turn it in 3D space.

You can use “Sequence Replicator” to raise the z-position of your replicator cell.
if the replicator’s origin is set to “Center”, this will create a ripple effect.
The “Loops” parameter can then be used to determine how many waves you want. The only problem is that each ripple will finish before the next one starts. Perhaps there is a way around that?Here is what I came up with:

If you want another ripple to come out from the centre before the current one finishes, simply duplicate the sequence replicator and trim the behavior to start before the first one finishes.
Keeping duplicating the behavior up as many times as you need. So you end up with what looks like a staircase in the timeline made up of your sequence replicators.
Just remember if you trim the sequence replicator shorter, if there are a number of loops set in the sequence controls it will get through them faster.
So set each replicator to one loop perhaps and overlap the sequence replicators as needed.

August 11, 2011 at 8:58 pmIn this very good use of replicators… the effect is created by using a sequence replicator behavior to offset the Z position of the replicator dots.
Select the sequence replicator, and then go to the behaviors subtab of the inspector.
Adjusting the z position will affect the height of ripple.
You may want to also adjust the spread value and loops amount to suit as well.
