  • The most efficient way to load a background image…

Hi again. I’ve been trying to model a car based on a provided blueprint but I am finding that I must map those blueprints to a plane or else they aren’t visible.

Is there another way that the image can be added as the background without having to assign it to an object?

Yes, you can load bitmaps directly into the orthographic viewports. Doesn’t work in the perspective viewport for obvious reasons. Go to the viewport’s Edit menu and choose “Configure”. Now click on the “Back” tab in the viewport properties.

Additionally, if you want to be able to see your ref images in perspective mode, simply apply them to plane primitives of equal dimension and set them up carefully so they align with eachother.

shift+v on supported viewports (no perspective)

For reference, using the Back setting of the orth views is best, but don’t forget using the “Background” object for the perp view.
