  • The ` key doesn’t follow program focus

Posted by Jan Janowski on November 24, 2010 at 12:34 pm

In CS5 I’m finding unusual behavior with the ` key.
(This is the key that makes a window full screen)

Instead of following the ‘focus’ of the window that is highlighted, it’s following the present position of the mouse.

For example: Highlight Timeline. Now do a (shift4). Focus should move to Program window. Put the mouse in the program window.
Now hit the ` key.. This Makes the Progarm window full screen, and this was my original intent — making program window fullscreen.

Now go back to your workspace and do the same thing, but leave the mouse in the timeline, or other window…. When you hit the ` key, even with the Program Window focused, the window that becomes full screen is the window the mouse was in, not the window that was previously focused!

I feel the ` key should make the presently focused window fullscreen, and the present position of the mouse should not affect this at all….

This plays havoc with keyboard shortcuts.

I found this out when making a macro for Shuttle Pro V2 key…. but it affects keyboard shortcuts, too…

Yep that’s how it works. Mouse panel hover bias.

I quite like the freedom to flick one and another without having to activate a panel first.

Might take some getting used to but you could leave the mouse over the timeline then and use shortcuts for the other panels.

    That’s Highly Counter-Productive….

Makes programming settings for automation work some times, and not others…

Try programming a macro into a Jog/Shuttle button with this… Works some times, but mostly not…

The Macro I was doing did this:

Switches to Program, Goes Full Screen, Backs up CTI 2 seconds and plays. All in one key….

Only works if mouse is on Program….

I got some real strange results with the mouse on window borders, and other places….

Is there another app you could run in the background that could include popping the pointer to a specific screen coordinate and simply pass thru the other key strokes for the automation?

No. I haven’t looked into another app…. I’m already running the Shuttle Pro V2 app…

The “Work Around” I’ve found is to put the mouse pointer in the Program Window when not used for other things…. at all times.. But I was hoping for a “More Elegant” solution….

Page 9 from the PPRO CS5 User’s Guide states:

    Display any panel full-screen
You can expand any panel to display it in full-screen mode, and toggle back to normal view.
1Select the panel you want to view full-screen.
2Press the grave accent key (`), or the key that takes its place on your keyboard. Typically, this key lies just to the left of the numeral one (1) key. Some refer to this key as the back quote key, or the tilde (~) key.
Press the back quote key again to toggle back to normal view.

    if I sense your point….

“select” is a bit misleading description…

The page that you’re quoting from is mistaken.

The feature is designed to maximize the panel under the mouse pointer.

The equivalent pages in After Effects Help get it right. (here and here)

If you’d like to request a change in behavior, please file a feature request.

    Hey Jan…

If you do submit a feature request…

    suggest it as a “Preference”

like the option to choose between the “select” and “hover” methods.

Thank You, Todd…. Yes, I did post as a Feature Request…

I’m suggesting it detect the last action, either Mouse move, or Window Focus command, and act according to last action…
This way, the folks who like mouse win because they move the mouse…..
And if I send a Macro from the Jog/Shuttle keys…. Say:
Shift+4 and then `, it will always work there, too… because I specifically pointed to the window I want to fullscreen with the Keyboard Shortcut, just like the User Manual indicates!
    This way, EVERYONE WINS!!!!

If other Folks would like to see it as a ‘Preference’ setting… Please post it as a feature request. I can deal with that, too…

Todd… I didn’t look in the After Effects manual for information on Premiere Pro Keys, because it’s an altogether different program….
