Wow just heard the blistering podcast by Walter and Richard. Unnerving to hear how Apple has essentially abandoned the future of pro editing. I am a FCP convert from Avid and now I feel like I have egg on my face. I am wondering what the future will be for Final Cut Pro? Will Apple never do an upgrade again? What happens in a year or two when all us editors are hanging on to this last version, applying band aids to repair the failing software – makes me think of the 50’s era American cars left over in Cuba, held together with string, custom parts and glue.
I already started looking into an Avid or Premiere Pro option. What are your thoughts on which way to go?
    Long live Final Cut Pro!

    FCP 6.06, OS 10.5.8 2x3GHZ Quad-Core Intel Xeon, Kona LHe, Dulce Duo-eSATA 8 Drive, 4TB Raid.

Apple ‘Jumped the Shark’ with this version of FCP. We’re all in deep trouble.

John, I would get yourself upgraded to 7.03 ASAP while software is still available. Apple has stopped it from their web site but stores like B&H still have software upgrades to FCS3 available.

Don’t wait, buy an upgrade now. That will give you the most time before considering your next move. FCP X may end up with pro features but if not, then your FCS3 suite should be able to cope for quite a while and buy time to consider alternatives.

It’s quite possible that much more functionality will be added once Lion is released. That’s what it was built for. Chris Kenny was examining the fcp x code and found hints of disabled XML import/export and some other findings.

All is not lost….at least yet.

[Chris Borjis] “Chris Kenny was examining the fcp x code and found hints of disabled XML import/export and some other findings.”

I am happy to wait and see. Meanwhile CS5 has just updated and no doubt AVID will soon too, so waiting will also mean the alternatives improve.

I am concerned that Apple has so much to catch up with and I do not see that they have a lot of reason to chase the true pro end of the market. Lucky for me, the good people at Fairlight allow me to load audio from FCP via XML so if FCP X does at least allow XML out I can take FCP X projects, grade in Color, sound post in Fairlight and play to tape with titles from CS5 or FCP 7 for a long time.

FCP7.03 is working fine and I intend to get a lot more out of my Color/ Tangent Wave combo before moving to a less buggy version of Da Vinci Resolve for Mac.

While normally I would recommend Avid as my NLE of choice (the trim tool is the best on the market by far) I think for ease of transition in terms of both hardware and transferable skills and media – Adobe Premiere is probably the way to go.
