I recently purchased the Sony HD camcorder HDR-XR550 & have a few question about using the AVCHD files.

The camera offers settings at several different qualities of HD & defaults to HD HQ which is I think 1440 x 11080i. Since I have a new fast PC & a TV that can show 1080P which I understand is the best output possible should I up the recording settings to HD FH recording or higher. Should I be able to see a real difference on the big screen?

Can Vegas handle all of different resolutions/bit rates at once on the time line? When it comes to rendering does the program have to re render the entire file or can it just re render adjoining clips that are on the time line? I seem to recall that Vegas used to have to re render the entire with MPEG2 but that this might have changed a few versions back

What output setting do I use to get a AVCHD stetting that is approximately the same size as what I started with? Is it the Sony AVC M2TS?

The camera comes with a program PMB Is there any problems with using that program to trim a clip & then import it into Vegas?

Will I still be able to put all different file type on the time line like MOV, JPEG, MPEG2 even if they had lesser resolution to start with?

Thats more than enough questions to statt with I hope that I don’t have too many more.

    Thanks in advance

[Paul Gregory] ” Since I have a new fast PC & a TV that can show 1080P which I understand is the best output possible should I up the recording settings to HD FH recording or higher. Should I be able to see a real difference on the big screen?”

I would always shoot at the highest setting. There is no sense in buying a good camera and then not using it’s full potential.

Yes, Vegas will handle all the different resolutions. There is nothing you need to worry about. It will smart render MPEG2 sections where the source is unchanged (i.e., no FX, Clpping, etc.) and the MPEG2 source is the same resolution and bit-rate. Otherwise it must re-render to match the output format.

[Paul Gregory] “What output setting do I use to get a AVCHD stetting that is approximately the same size as what I started with? Is it the Sony AVC M2TS?”

You may not be able to depending on the camera. Use the Sony AVC render type and use the template that matches the closest. Vegas doesn’t smart render AVCHD so you don’t need to be precise. The AVCHD 1920×1080-60i will probably be the closest.

[Paul Gregory] “The camera comes with a program PMB Is there any problems with using that program to trim a clip & then import it into Vegas?”

In general PMB is OK, but you can use Vegas to get the footage right off of the camera as well. use View | Device Explorer (Ctrl+Alt+7) in Vegas to see the clips on the camera and only copy the ones you want to your hard drive.

Yes, Vegas is really good about supporting files of multiple formats and resolutions at the same time.
